this is all so wrong
brostep=hipster
It's the idea of what was originally called dubstep becoming "cool" to a wider population.
That's the way I see it at any rate. I do love me some brostep now and then though!

This.
There's basically two main parts of being a hipster. The first (and more accurate imo) is the mindset. My taste is better than yours.
Brostep is not hipster by a long shot. Way too aggro and way too popular. Like people have said hipsters listen to music that's on the "fringe", "underground" and "edgy", like mount kimbie, flylo, or james blake (less CMYK, more his latest album) because that is more "intelligent" than the more conventional music that's more likely to be played out. If any of their beloved sounds become mainstream they are going to abandon it, and all the while they ironically worship certain pop acts (examples: Kanye west, gaga, etc.). Pitchfork is pretty much hipster central, and ironically the more hardcore hipsters will reject pitchfork based on that. Appreciating indie music is pretty much a must. They are the people who think they are more musically inclined because they buy records. They are the people who think brostep is so cliche and mainstream they can't have anything to do with it. Again it's more of a mindset.
Secondly, the fashion. I don't know shit about fashion but the pics here are pretty spot and if you peruse this site you get the general gist of it.
So please stop mislabeling angry simple-minded teenagers as hipsters. You're much more likely to find hipsters on (this) message boards than a datsik show.
