iii) Power/Control/Dominance are NOT specifically masculine qualities, and not uniquely 'bad' or negative. This is important and where i believe my main point of contention with Feminism lies; at core, Feminism attributes these qualities a specifically Masculine context. If we're dealing with Equality, the slate doesn't have to be drawn clean in the contexts of all the issues presented above (that i have not once questioned, and advocate and condone) - but the conceptual idea's of Feminity as being intrinsically 'positive' and Masculinity as being instrinsically 'negative' are as divisive as they are damaging.
Feminism does NOT attribute these qualities to a masculine context. The goal is to deconstruct those binary gender roles as well. You're right and both interpretations continue to push sexist stereotypes inasmuch as we're dealing with masculine v. feminine dichotomies. But this just isn't the argument:
I think a big part of the "problem" with feminism is that the general populace's conception of what constitues feminism is not actually what feminism's necessarily about. Case in point the whole lesbian thing that's become stereotypically attached to it. I've learnt quite a lot just reading through this thread about what feminism is about, as opposed to what joe blogs or feminist zealots think it's about. And there again are the problems with all such movements towards equality (or perhaps a better term would be "freedom to be as you are"):
1) Misinformation, which leads to people getting the wrong message and building the wrong associations with the movement. This turns them away.
2) Zealotry, where people with extreme views are most often also the loudest voices that give the movements a, frankly, annoyance factor that simply turns potential supporters away. It also leads to misinformation as these extreme viewpoints then get associated with said movements.
3) Resistance, where elements of society that actively resist the movement actively spread misinformation, and which generally results in new zealots popping up on all sides of the debate and making things even more annoying for everyone.
Moderates need to speak out with greater assertiveness to prevent zealots (from any side) from drowning out the real message, otherwise it will just never happen.
As a thought experiment, if men were given the ability to become pregnant, how do people think that this could potentially shift the equality issue? I think that it could be a positive step forward since childbearing would no longer be automatically assigned to women.
