Dub Scout wrote:I've been noticing this a lot recently - first it started with skrillex, but now it seems the producers such as zomboy, break the noize and filthzilla all are getting this punchy, "pitched" snare sound. it's really bugging me.

the closest ive been able to come is on this track : Soundcloud (i did the snares for this one)

i think they sound ok, but i cant seem to get that punch, followed a lot of advice in terms of eqing and all that but methinks i just don't have the right sample.

Could anyone help me out?
I posted the exact same words on another thread but I'm too lasy too rewrite another detailed paragraph. I made this snare AND the song so credit goes to me (only if you need to lol).

Anyways here:
Hey man, I know a way to give you a fat snare like the one in this track:

Soundcloud

Skip to about 1:48 into the song for the snare.

To make it from scratch, use 909s as a start (Compress all these samples)
Body-Eq one at 200hz so you hear that thud/boof sound. Take out some highs.
Transient-Find an acoustic snare with a nice transient. Like a snare crack. Take the start of it (the transient) then boost to around 700hz-3000hz to give harmonics to the body. Layer the sample about 3-5 times.
Tail-Use a stock 909 from Ableton or really any 909 with white noise. Take out all the lows by highpassing at 3000hz. Add reverb. Add a china cymbal for a better sound with also some reverb (in my opinion).
And finally, get a clap. Cut off the first bit of the sample. Add reverb to it and boost at 1000hz for a nice tail addition..

When you print the snare as one, use an eq and lower the gain at the 300hz and 180hz frequencies and boost a bit at 200hz again. Also boost at 1000hz with the q at 50.0. Now use a camelcrusher and put some distortion and compression.
Hope this helped :)

ogunslinger wrote:Yea honestly it's just about layering your snares and picking the frequencys to blend together, I like to use some vengeance stuff as well as some stuff from BHK, he's got some nice snares in some of his packs as well, I usually almost always layer in a 909 and it seems to give me that punch. Really comes down to creatively using several samples together as one. imo taking your time to build a nice kit always pays off...... edit: not really seeing anything special in koans snares :o

EDIT: POLISH THEM TURDZZZZZZ
You wouldn't believe how many video tutorials I've looked up for snares when I was a newbie and they all said "use vengeance". I'm glad there are still people who make their OWN snares from scratch. I do the same. But I still use vengeance samples (not usually, or anymore really) but I just distort and eq them n shit to make it "my own" sound so they sound nothing like the original. I really take the distorted-ish click sort of snares in the electro essentials pack and just turn it into something else. Does that still count as creating?
