Telling me that it's racist to take pride in my heritage suggests that you are in fact, racist.
Shame on you.

I think the confusion's coming from Ninjas having various definitions of culture, ethnicity and race.Terpit wrote:Hmm,, dontagree with you there 'none of this has anything to do with ethnicity' living in an Arab country I see them treating women like shit all the time, the guys I work with literally see women as baby makers and chefs. Culture = Stuff you learn from your environment. Pretty much everything in that pretty little head of yours.
Ethnicity = An element of culture: stuff you learn from your parents, ancestors and societal elders. For instance German immigrants teaching their English-born kids to be bilingual and appreciate oompah bands.
Race = Genetics
People often seem to get Ethnicity and Race confused, but they're not linked at all - an adopted son in Golder's Green could realistically be culturally English, ethnically Jewish and racially Kenyan.
Sexism can definitely have cultural and ethnic ties, but it doesn't have racial ones.

I think he meant that you get the same shit in other countries by people of different cultures, societies, ethnicities and races.Terpit wrote:Hmm,, dontagree with you there 'none of this has anything to do with ethnicity' living in an Arab country I see them treating women like shit all the time, the guys I work with literally see women as baby makers and chefs. Re: serious discussion about casual racism in europe
I think this is a simple debate tbh. If someone's an arsehole, they're just an arsehole because they're an arsehole and not a particular skin colour, you see? They're responding to their environment, their experiences, and their sociocultural education. People of many disparate races can have the same environments, educations and experiences, so saying that someone's behaviours are pre-determined by race (when we enter this world as babies - blank canvases), is puerile and massively ignorant.

I have way more respect for someone who admits to having a racist thought on occasion but realizes it's wrong than some dude who thinks he's above that and acts like he's a beacon of tolerant light in a world filled with prejudice and racism.(Pada) wrote:Might be in yours but not in mine mateJBoy wrote: Its in our DNA to be racist i think.

Humans have had millenia of conditioning to fear and hate foreign people. Racism has only been frowned on in the last century if that.Genevieve wrote:I have way more respect for someone who admits to having a racist thought on occasion but realizes it's wrong than some dude who thinks he's above that and acts like he's a beacon of tolerant light in a world filled with prejudice and racism.(Pada) wrote:Might be in yours but not in mine mateJBoy wrote: Its in our DNA to be racist i think.

Racism is a socially taught ability. If you're taught equality you never pick it up
I'd hope by now most racism would be on its way out

Racism as we know it is a social construct, but it's the product of a more underlying trait that all humans have. We're all "supposed" to favor "our tribe" over someone else's "tribe" and our judgements reflect that. They're a defense mechanism, where we're safer in our own environment and less safe in another. At a time where various tribes were fighting over limited resources on the African plains, it was a good feature to have.pkay wrote:Racism is a socially taught ability. Like I said, I'll call bullshit on everyone who claims to have never had a sexist or homophobic or racist thought. It's not the thought that matters, it's your actions that do. If I catch myself thinking something sexist, I'm not gonna spin it and claim to be some fucking infallible angel, but I'm not gonna let that thought influence my actions either.

Re: serious discussion about casual racism in europe
I'd like to interject that yes racism is a social and cultural issue. But the capacity to become racist is in fact biological through schematisation of the world and people around us. Without this quality though, we probably wouldn't actually "know" anything.

Re: serious discussion about casual racism in europe
There are many evolutionary biologists who would challenge this common assumption. The argument has also been made that humans retain a basic urge to find genes that are different from their own to provide what's known as "hybrid vigor," or basically a lack of inbreeding... for example, dogs that are mutts are usually much genetically healthier than so-called purebreds, simply because purebreds got that way through deliberate and intensive inbreeding for desired traits.Genevieve wrote:Racism as we know it is a social construct, but it's the product of a more underlying trait that all humans have. And me personally: as an American of mainly German and Swedish descent, it's hard to be more honky than I am... and I have always been more attracted to dark-skinned gyals!

(my first crush was on Shari Belafonte when I was like 7.) That being said - I also believe we have to have a somewhat innate sense of xenophobia as well that balances this urge for strange 'tang. As with anything else, it's a continuum and not a binary set of options. Some people, some cultures are going to favor one tendency more than the other based on what's beneath.
Re: serious discussion about casual racism in europe
Yup many theories revolving around our instinct being to mate with those not in our 'tribe's
