WMC Preview: The Week in Dubstep

For those of you unfamiliar with dubstep, its sound first originated in London in the early 2000's and is a close relative of both UK garage and drum and bass. Rooted in the sparse yet effects-laden production stylings of dub reggae, one of dubstep's best qualities is its versatility in encompassing elements of pretty much any electronic music genre you can think of: trance, electro, hip-hop, jungle, etc. What characterizes it as its own sound, however, are the fast 165-185 bpm breakbeats accompanied by heavy, gut-rattling sub-bass --it's all about the bass!
Dubstep should probably be alot more popular in the States, but so far it has only caught on at the fringe of EDM subculture. But it could be huge if more people got exposed to it over here, because it often boasts that same wicked swagger as crunk hip-hop, and that same blissed-out booty-bouncing directive (without the atrocious vocals.) Of course we can count on WMC week to bring us some rare dubstep talent both regional and international. If you're feeling limber, open-minded and wanna think outside the four-to-the-floor box, you'll do good in checking out at least one of these parties.
Dub & Bass: A Celebration of Bass Culture
Not strictly a dubstep night, you'll hear everything from drum and bass and jungle to old school breaks at this celebration of all things bass. The dubstep area will feature, among others, MRK-1, Infiltrata, Trill Bass with DJ Lord of Public Enemy, and Miami's own Juan Basshead.
Wednesday, March 25, 8 p.m.-5 a.m. Jazid, 1342 Washingtong Ave, Miami Beach. $10 before 11 p.m./$15 after.
London Bass in Miami Pt. 2
With its intimate setting and stellar lineup, this is the dubstep event to attend this year. Artists featured include none other than the actual pioneers of dubstep, Skream and Benga, who single-handedly invented the genre at the beggining of the decade in the London borough of Croydon. These are the originals --not to be missed! They are joined by Juan Basshead, our greatest local proponent of dubstep and owner of Black Sheep Bar, one of the few joints in Miami where you can hear this stuff all year around.

Future Sound of Breaks 2009
This is the biggest '09 WMC event for the myriad breakbeat movements of the world. With something like 200+ international artists ranging the entire spectrum of sounds, you'll see everyone from legendary drum and bassists Goldie, Ed Rush and Optical, to Skream, Mala, Plastician and even our very own Otto Von Schirach who will join the dubstep arena that night!
