i personally cant stand reason's zoom, i like zooming with the mouse so having to click zoom on x and zoom on y separately is a bitch compared to scrubbing
Its been a little while, but I think you just hold a modifier and scroll the wheel and it zooms right in, you don't have to click anything or move your mouse anywhere. Same with fl's piano roll. Thing FL doesn't have that both abelton and reason have is scroll wheel to scroll the clip. Love that. But still, I jump in and jump out all the time and its just a little +1 pain every time. That's all. Am just loving abelton though

Some 8 books coming out in October. Can't wait for that. Get my study on.

Anyone know of any decent screenshots that have the names of all these different views some of you keep mentioning? "session view" and "dummy clips" for example.

session view is the microsoft excel looking screen
dummy clips are a bit complicated to explain...i made a thread on them but you may need to watch a vid on it by the covert operators
http://www.thecovertoperators.org/Searc ... ummy+clips
they got good shit on it...
think of dummy clips as a custom dBlue Glitch plugin

Ok, Reason, does not have a mouse scroll zoom, like where you push a mod key then scroll to zoom in and out, although it does have time ruler scrolling (Shift) and a vertical resizing (CTRL), the worst prog for zooming imo....
With ableton, the scrub zoom is everything, although there are still scroll bars, vertical in usual place, and horizontal at the TIME bar at the bottom, not to be confused with the measure bar at the top. Then above that you have the overview scrub zoom (making words up here), click and hold this and the world is your oyster, this feature is also in your clip view.
Another good feature is in arrangement view, select a part of any track, whether it has any data in it or not, then simply double click the measure bar at top and it will zoom into that portion! Also works in clip view.
Never used the + n - keys tbh, they are well too far away from my left hand.
Someone hinted about having that keyboard shortcuts wallpaper as your desktop, i leaned the lot in 3-4 wekks, and its sped thing s up a-LOT! holla if you need link...
Big up ableton.

i dled that wallpaper, but I most likely lost thinking "I'm the best, I can remember ALL the shortcuts".
after taking a week and a half of beat making I'm already forgetting some shortcuts....I'd like that link.

Anyone got a good source for step by step basics on Ableton? I been using Youtube but would like standard website with screenshots.
Basic things like, adding VSTs, Adding FX, automation and macros etc.

open the little triangle on the lower left
it will give you info for whatever you hover over
there should be some great tutorirals in the ableton folder though

(Shift+?) opens help window/Info view. Not just ? like it says on wallpaper, but adding vst's is the same with other daw's, you scan your vst folder (mine is in a Cakewalk directory as i was using Sonar) and they will appear in the 3rd party plug in list pane (looks like a American AC plug, 3rd one down).
Then simply drag the plug-in to a Midi track, or an empty space where the track will be made.

theres another tab that opens up when you open a tutorial set, on the right side
that has some step by step stuff i think

Hey heads,
is there a way to midi map record quantization switch on and off.
Say laying a beat with kicks and snares, I'd like the quant to be on, but then wanna do hh's, so wanna turn it off, drag to go up to edit into a two tiered drop down to switch it off. I constantly need to switch it on and off. Please heads, how do u do it?

i dont think you can
however just turn quantize off, and press cntrl-U after playing the loop or
turn quantization on, and if you don't want it, ableton adds an extra undo step when you record a quantized loop, meaning press cntrl-z and the quantization for that take will disappear

Yeah, doi! Just Ctrl + 0 and turn the global quant off. DOI

Little dood is saying doi.
Quick q - I midi mapped a button on the mpk to toggle OVR on and off, but it would not work. I key mapped a key from the keyboard and it did work. What gives brohams?

is the computer keyboard mapped to the notes? ( its the keyboard looking button) turn that off
and sometimes you have to hold it down to enable the ovr mode
i have mine mapped to a sustain pedal

its beautiful
