u fuk

I chopped up a buncha guitar sound effects I made last night. My fuckin drum pads are sticking randomly though. Can't wait for the fatpads. Got a folder of acapellas to go through and chop now. The horns resampling will be time consuming too. I gotta multi-track them as if they were actual single horn players and program minute variations in tone and articulation. Then squish em all together.

I could see me actually finishing by next week, surprisingly enough. I've been trying to hammer away at this DSP book though and I have 2 half-hour episodes of dialogue to edit and mix that I should probably do sometime soon, so who knows how productive I'll be.

Yeah in this case, I'm also being idealistically pricky, as well. They're distributing binaries for a very good price, it just goes against the customs/expectations that come along with an open-source project. I tend to get unnecessarily protestive in such cases.

Re Bitwig:
I doubt it'll be released at this point. It has lost all of its momentum and, even if it was released, would not be considered by a large enough portion of the music production community to sustain itself as a commercial application. Given the absence of an actual product, I'm starting to believe that Bitwig was never in development and that, instead, it was a manipulative attempt to get the Ableton staff to think they were in competition with an allegedly similar and superior product. ⁂Conspiracy theory⁂

Nah I definitely think people will take notice when it releases. There's tons of people just trying to get in on the closed beta. I imagine they planned to release it earlier but ran into a lot of shit to fix during beta, that's why the seem to have shot their load too early. I imagine they'll ship it right after a Musikmesse or NAMM or something and try to steal the headline story spot on all the music blogs. All it takes is an in-depth review on CDM and a few well produced demo videos and people will be all over it. Especially if they unveil some secret features that haven't been disclosed yet.

Wow I just checked out some of their devices and they're all suuuuuper similar to Ableton plugs. That's kinda greasy honestly, at least change the GUIs around a bit or some shit. Although I guess if you designed some effect, you have the right to re-implement that effect in any other software projects you work on. If anything, the two attempting to operate in the same niche will force massive innovation on both parts. Never a bad thing for the end users.

Not necessarily. A separate party could do the same thing. I find the abovementioned scenario less likely, actually.

Well yeah considering how lacking the last Ableton update was. Not a monumental upgrade by any means. A third party seems even less likely though I think. Who would benefit from Ableton upping their game in the face of fresh competition? (apart from me)

Unsatisfied users would.

 Seems like a lot of effort to go through, having working demos at music trade shows just to up the ante for Ableton. If I was gonna put in that kind of work as a dev, I'd just actually make the program and not be dependent on someone else to implement what I want.

Cause nobody wants a piece of that. It's like that friend who's into fat chicks. You always wonder if he does it purely to eliminate competition.

Ah, last I checked, they didn't make it to that stage. I suppose your point is valid. Still doubt it has the potential to be a major contender anymore, since its initial release is almost a year past-due and nobody expresses any excitement for it anymore, as far as I've seen.

Yeah exactly. I can respect the hustle but ultimately it's a beta move.

I think Reason's avoided adding vst support for ages and now they've finally realize that it's a bit stupid so they're doing these rack extensions so they can have vst without really having vst. That way they're still not in direct competition with other DAWs.
