The Official Growl Bass Thread
Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Guys, there's really no need to use formant tables. You can set a peak anywhere you like and have it result in some cool harmonics, the only reason you'd need a formant table is if you want a very specific vowel. Don't get lost in the numbers, set a peak anywhere you think it sounds cool and then sweep it around. Works just as well, check the tune in my sig for reference.

Freshest track atm.

search my posts in this thread i posted an image linkREAP3RMusic wrote:Could I get a page reference please mate? I sort of understand the principle behind it but when I try to apply it, I dont get anything that sounds remotely growl-y. I'm using a source sound from fm8 with a sine as the carrier modulated by another sine which is in turn modulated by a 10th formant wave. I'm running it through ohmicide and camel crusher and then using EQ 8 with a peak at 1kHz and another at roughly 250Hz. I'm modulating the peak at 250 up to 1kHz. Where am I going wrong?

I followed it but I got a little lost towards the end. What exactly is being automated and where?claudedefaren wrote:search my posts in this thread i posted an image linkREAP3RMusic wrote:Could I get a page reference please mate? Only the EQ is being automated at the MIDI level. Everything is either stagnant or modulated by LFO. Does that make sense?

Oh, sorry, you might have been referring to the FM8 patch.. if so, look at the envelopes I screenshotted in the document
Or I guess ask further if they don't make sense

I automated the eq but I'm unsure as to the parameters of the automation. Right now the peak is sweeping the entire spectrum which is obviously not the right way to go about it. Do I just sweep between the notches? I'll post my results at some point.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Okay so after some experimentation with formant EQing, I managed to come up with this.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/uy0rmbyd8mm1zmk/Vowel.aif
Still, it sounds a bit too throaty. Anyone have any ideas how I can heavy it up a little in the same vein as this?

literally all this patch is, is a sin modulated by another sine modulated by a formant 10 wave in fm8. after that i automated a eq with a large spike to make it more vowelly.
after that very very minimal effects. a little bit of high end reverb and maybe a mostly dry vocoder.
BRING ON THE IDEAS BRETHREN!!!!!

Hook didn't mention anything about frequency splitting/resampling.Jonathan Topore wrote:i send my final bass to 3 sends. lows/mids/highs and eq them seperately

I'd love to hear an example though, it sounds interesting

right sorry, i forgot to post the macro params. I'll post the patch of that eq8 later tonight, that will be easierREAP3RMusic wrote:I automated the eq but I'm unsure as to the parameters of the automation. Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Well, although I haven't gotten into experimenting with it much, I think one of the basic growls going on these days in the "dubstep" scene is simply Sine modulation with a triangle wave and 10th formant with maybe some sawtooth thrown into it, however you wanna get the sound or whatever, but I would like to add that I think a certain distortion is used in a lot of them, and I wouldn't be surprised if I found a "major" one. Ableton Live>Live Devices>Audio Effects>Frequency Shifter>Electric Distortion. change the settings a little bit. I got it at Amount: 18.3hz Rate: 50hz Width: 82.5% Frequency: -3.04 khz spread: 33.6 Hz Dry/Wet: 40.5% [wide] is on mode is [shift] shape is noise. seems to be a pretty close match to some sounds you all might have heard, and it really does well over whatever stock sound you get out of FM8 but I do have overdrive going on in FM8 as well as peak EQ in the effects tab. Alright, peace.

Quite true but I was directly referring to the growl in his track and I wanted to hear an example of a growl using resampling to see how it compared.OfficialDAPT wrote:Apparentlymromgwtf wrote:Is he your lord or something?REAP3RMusic wrote:Hook didn't mention anything about frequency splitting/resampling.I tell ya though, even though some producers sound like what you want to sound like doesn't mean everything they say is the law...
