"theyre so overpopulated they needed it"
7000 dead isnt gonna make a huge dent on their population

No, there's just no black people in Japan, so they are worth saving.Electric_Head wrote:The bloody Americans were too slow to assist their own people, they`re assisting the Japanese to make themselves feel better.
Re: Major Earthquake + Tsunami in Japan
so the Fukushima power plant situation is starting to look pretty dire... All 6 reactors are now having issues, some more sever than others...
Re: Major Earthquake + Tsunami in Japan
My girls and I are doing a garage sale and maybe another art/fashion event for Japan. We just did one last year for Haiti and everyone got stressed out about it, so we thought about relaxing a bit and doing a garage/bake sale instead (donating all proceeds to Red Cross). I thought it would be nice to screen print every clothes I am selling with something related to Japan. Really excited about it that I just wanted to share.
Still haven't heard from a friend though. I am getting worried by the minute. She hasn't answered my email and her FB comments.

Don`t misinterpret my post.pkay wrote:Let's say you're right. It's a huge publicity stunt. The end result is hundreds of millions in aid, fleets of helicopters, and search and rescue teams are sent to help out people in need. So who the fuck cares? Would you rather that aid not go to Japan?Electric_Head wrote: Clifford - notice how they comment on Toyota and American cars as though American cars are sooooo sought after world wide?
It just seems that a large percentage of American people are just against Japan regardless.
They talk about Catrina as though they actually assisted their own people and now expect Japan to have assisted them.
The bloody Americans were too slow to assist their own people, they`re assisting the Japanese to make themselves feel better.
It`s all a massive publicity stunt on the part of the American Gov.
You sound more concerned with the politics of this all and not helping the people of Japan, in turn making you a piece of shit.
If the american 'publicity stunt' saves one life then it's worth it in the long run.
I was merely opening a discussion point.
I`m nothing but troubled by this earthquake.
I agree that the Japanese people need serious amounts of aid, everyone needs to assist.
I just got my back up because of those heartless misinformed posters.
I have a friend who has just had to leave Tokyo for another prefecture because of high radiation levels.
I don`t really appreciate the "they deserved it" crap

Re: Major Earthquake + Tsunami in Japan
One plant was designed to only withstand a 6.5 quake... Here in california over the last 20 years, I've been in two quakes over that magnitude... honestly, I'm at a loss. There is nothing I can really say about that...
In legal terms, an actor's culpability is determined by his mens rea. There is a spectrum, from negligence, to recklessness, to knowledge, and then to purpose.
There is no evidence that the design of these facilities was purposeful, in that there is nothing that suggests it was the plant designers conscious object to bring about the harm that is now being and potentially could be done. But this also seems beyond recklessness. I think it could be argued that the plant designers and operators knowingly built a facility that was reasonably certain to cause the harm that we are now seeing. That is a criminal level of culpability (of murder, if a death results).

Well they did a pretty good job of surviving a doomsday scenario so they'll probably hold out a lot longer. End of the day they can just drop a cover on it like they did to Chernobyl, the fact that that's not happening right now is probably because there's still a good chance the affected building can be sealed and isolated before being worked on. Because seawater is being pumped in to cool it seems recovering the reactor intact is unlikely (sea water is corrosive) but at least it didn't blow straight away, plus it was already shutdown when the earthquake happened minimising risks.

Higher radiation levels have been detected 100 miles out at sea on US military ships, and things haven't gotten truly out of hand yet. Don't get me wrong, I'd like this thing to turn out for the better, but that is not the direction it is headed right now. Beyond what is likely, you could have the plutonium reactor meltdown and a strong southerly wind...

Re: Major Earthquake + Tsunami in Japan
A friend of mine who was an Air Force translator in my squadron (speaks Japanese) was just sent over there Sunday to help with a counseling team with the red cross/crescent. She said there has been dozens if not hundreds of suicides in the past few days from the non stop anxiety of the situation and anticipated nuclear situations.
She facebooked a story of a 12 year old boy who was the sole survivor of car crash. Apparently they all survived the initial tsunami but as they were exiting he was stuck in the back seat. As the tide went back out it took everyone in his family who had exited the car.... he remained stuck in the car and lived through it. Can you even imagine that shit?
She sad there have been just crazy stories of people just vanishing with the water and are presumed dead and countless people suffering from survivors guilt.
Just makes me nauseous to think of what the Japanese people at large must be going through.... thoughts and prayers still with them all.

Re: Major Earthquake + Tsunami in Japan
I dont mean to be THAT guy but I've been following this closely and it seems like the final chapter of this will be written soon.
Various sources saying there's no water left in reactor #4 so the spent rods are burning with no coolant which is pretty much worst case scenario. There's been that explosion this morning which has shattered all the building on one of the reactor buildings.
Japan seem worried that the USA is revealing the true level of danger of the situation and USA has evecuated all americans 100miles (i think it was that) out of the area and all local news stations are evacuating. Traces of radiation found on numerous news crews clothing which was previously stationed near the plant
The level of radiation at the fourth reactor has reached a level so high that they can't get near enough to try and rescue it. Apparently its that bad they're having problems even in the 3rd reactor.
American officials predict that if the spent fuel rods in the 4th reactor keep burning and worst comes to worst, the area will be severly irradiated for a 29 mile radius around the plant and will be unhabitable (not sure for how long)
I pray to god they somehow manage to get power restored or somehow cool down the rods in the fourth reactor
anyone heard anything about that volcano that apparently erupted a few days ago too in japan?

"Robert Alvarez, senior scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies and a former official with the Department of Energy.
That caught fire, resulting in a situation that is "very, very serious," he told CNN. He said the next solution may involve nuclear plant workers having to take heroic acts. Asked to be more specific, he said, "This is a situation where people may be called in to sacrifice their lives. ... It's very difficult for me to contemplate that but it's, it may have reached that point."

Re: Major Earthquake + Tsunami in Japan
Well a couple of things, I've read that it is 900 years until the land is safe around Chernobyl. But I've also heard that a meltdown in JP's reactors would be worse in the local vicinity, because they didn't use graphite, which was lighter, and thus traveled further in chernobyl. So you'll get a stronger burn around these facilities, but less defuse effects.Sheff wrote:will be unhabitable (not sure for how long)
Sorry for my crappy language on this one.
Re: Major Earthquake + Tsunami in Japan
there's only a small window of time to cool a core before you're fighting an uphill battle. At least we know this is coming and can prevent what happened in the past
