Was just having the same discussion with a friend like 2 hours ago. The way I see it: arena anthem stuff like pendulum, sub focus etc = rusko, dub police; skullstep = brostep. But it's all subjective. I personally like (or liked, haven't listened in a long while) a lot of Current Value and Tech Itch, some Counterstrike, Gein, DJ Hidden etc.

What I trully loathe is annoying wobbly jump-up shit like Original Sin, bro-ish tunes from Counterstrike and CV, and god awful gabba-like shit like recent Cooh, Limewax etc.

Most Americans aren't in to jump-up at all lol. Most people I meet are jaded junglists, wishing for the glory days of BC, Virus, No U Turn, etc to come back.

Id say most of them are along of the lines of what Pkay said.....original techsteppers. I cant even begin to count the number of older Yanks I met whose first exposure to dnb was Tech Itch + DSL - Atlantic State or some of DSL's mix cds

They still do, but I was referring to the kinda mainstream-ness of them. As we like bitching about mainstream-ness here.

This thread has gotten me kinda interested in techstep. Skullstep is too heavy for me, but that tech stuff is dark without being too much. Artists to check?

I would only really class the stuff that comes out on labels like Playaz, Frontline etc as the 'brostep' of DnB. Shogun is bordering on it, especially with the latest releases from The Prototypes.

Labels like Critical and Metalheadz though... That's some good DnB. I think now though that it's hard to say what is 'bro' and what isn't in the scene really because I'm starting to find that in general, each record label has their own 'sound' or style. It's hard to get a release on a label that doesn't sound similar to other releases on the same label because that sound is what makes the label what it is.

Ofcourse that's if you define 'bro' as music that artists have effectively 'copied' off of other artists that started that kind of sound. In that sense, you could really call anything 'bro'.

I'm quite interested to know now: what would everyone define 'bro' as?

Technical Itch (obviously), Dom & Roland, Ed Rush & Optical, E-Sassin, SPKTRM, EBK, BKey, Calyx & Teebee, Kantyze, Thought, Nphonix, early Dylan on Freak and Renegade Hardware...hope that gets you started

Prototypes are the one slightly commercial act on Shogun. Most of their stuff - Spectra Soul, Alix Perez, Rockwell, Icicle, etc. is very deep. Though I know Friction has leaned a bit more commercial at times.

Nah that's very true after looking through their releases I have I've changed my mind and retract that statement.

As ultraspatial said, some is a bit shitty but they're not really brostep of dnb. I think lately they've gone a little bit more commercial, but some of my favourite tunes ever are on shogun; Icicle - Minus, Alix Perez - Stray, Spectrasoul - The Gift etc. etc.

Not sure what I was on about now tbh.

to re-edit my earlier statment... I'd say skullstep got a lot of the same shit brostep got.... ie too aggro, but as far as talent, skullstep has some of the most talented producers I've been around. If we're talking drum edits its not even a contest. Skullstep far more talented than boom tsk boom tsk two step bullshit.

if we're talking lack of musical talent or overusing the same effects then twisted, baron, distorted minds (personal dirty secret fav), clipz, a lot of BBK, were pretty bro
