yes, popular is almost always bad. there are a few exceptions though I guess..

why the hell should he be told its a stupid idea and it wont happen.
All youre doing is placing limiting beliefs on the guy and anyone else who reads it...and limiting beliefs, create limits.
Just because it's not your goal or your idea of what people should make music for, it doesn't mean other people
aren't allowed to make it.

This is why I hate mixing with "grown-up" people. It's either:
a) Impossible to achieve anything
b) Incredibly naive to think you'll get anywhere
c) You're gonna have to "sell-out" or "lose your way" or "alienate your fam from back in the day" or something derogatory to your character
I say if you wanna get big, then go for it and put in the work. If you don't at least try then you'll never get big.

On the real you do what you want to do. If you start listening to other people, doing what they suggest and you don't enjoy it, your selling out regardless of weather it is deemed "underground" or "commercial"
Stay true to yourself and your ideals, the rest will fall into place

No, it's not. It might be different from what you would have as a goal, but it's by no means 'stupid'.

That's what I intend to do - selling out is the last thing that I want to do. It's more that I would love to get big, but if I could just support myself making music then that would be the dream life for me. Even if I have to have other jobs, as long as I can make music that I like, I'll be happy.
It's more that, I think if I truly like my tunes, then some other people may like em too. I don't have incredibly obscure tastes. So if I do make music that I love, and I push it well and others love it too, then maybe I would go somewhere, and that's what I mean by wanting to get big.
But all of this is far in the future.....

I agree. A load of the most famous musicians made it because they just chose not to give up by taking the risk. If we kick and scream and fight like hell, we move forward a little bit.

I agree - that's how change in music occurs - correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that none of the revolutionaries got big trying to cop anyone else or doing what they thought the mainstream would like, because generally "mainstream" tastes are formulaic (not to be a hipster - but it's true).

Yeah. The fact that becoming a recognized and respected artist doesn't mean "going mainstream" in the sense of selling out.
Dubstep itself originally became recognized because of artists like Skream, Benga and Digital Mystikz making a new, different totally UN-mainstream sound.
Yes, it became even bigger when some artists brought it closer to the mainstream but it originally "went big" because of different and new ideas and sounds.

So a mate just got me to listen to the previews of the new Skrillex EP on Beatport. I wasn't feeling it, and his aggy tracks are more annoying and noisy than ever, but there is one positive. Only 3 of the 7 tracks are 140bpm, and 1 of those sounds nothing like any kind of dubstep. It seems like he's almost as eager to cut his ties to dubstep as we are for him to do it, and I'm glad of that cos I personally couldn't give a fuck what he does as long as people stop automatically associating his name with dubstep.
So I guess... we're winning? Or something?
