I checked in the vicinity but didn't see anything that prevent the mixer channel switching. Will reinvestigate.

Okay, this is how I've been selecting samples. Yes this is a 90's solution, but this is 90's software. I open the pool, then I open my os library folder with all samples. Then I'll just start playing samples with VLC media player. This way I can hear the sample while the song is playing in cubase. It's the only way to make an accurate decision about the fitness of the sample. I'll just then drag the sample from the os window into the pool window, then from the pool, into the project.

This all works, though, because I've got a sound card with an internal mixer so can mix os level sounds with cubase.

This is a ridiculous work around and an embarrassment for cubase, but what u going to do?

HA HA HA, I am still laughing.

I have found THE best sound browser for cubase...

flstudio!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so so funny

Just load flstudio as a vsti, and you can drag and drop from fl's browser into either the main project page, or into the audio folder of the pool

This way, you can keep cubase's playback rolling, and audition sounds live, in context.

This is valuable.

Think u may need the latest fruity and cubase to do this, don't think it worked in 8/4.

This is making my life better.

Every time i'm importing audio Cubase wants to time stretch it... any help?

So I just found that using the MediaBay for previewing audio files is completely useable in Cubase 4.1 and completely unuseable in Cubase 5...apparently they changed it in version 4.5 so that the file doesn't play until the waveform image is loaded, which takes about a second. In version 4.1, it plays it instantly. Also, I can drag and drop into Shortcircuit in 4.1. They actually took out functionality in a later version?? LAAAAAME. (Now I'm a little frustrated, if you can't tell  ).

I was coming in here to tell you I have no problems dragging and dropping files from the media bay to the project

don't know why you cannot

Not from the media bay, but the import dialog, don't know what it's called.

I honestly recommend using fruity as a browser, it is instantaneous and more importantly, you can listen to the sample in context.

This problem is solved for me.

The fact that you can't stop mixer channels from moving around... come on.

Sorry, I meant in reference to my earlier post; I can't drag-and-drop from the "Import Audio File" window, which I can do in versions 4 and below. I use this to preview files instead of Media Bay because it auditions files instantly instead of having to wait a full second before a sample plays like in 5.

I don't know - I like mediabay and and I can nicely listen to the samples in context. But yeah, there is a delay. That's why FL's browser is better but I dont own it :(
Sometimes its cool to use Battery's (Kontakt's) browser to search the samples.

thanks in advance

Educational versions are no different to full retail versions the dongle just reads your serial as Cubase 5, the only difference is the pos price from what I have found so far.

If you take the time to do a full rescan of all your sample locations on your hd's in media-bay when you first install cubase, it creates a cached file which should speed up the previewing of audio files. Then as you add new files just rescan the individual folders and this updates the cached file. Took me about an hour to scan about 200gb worth of samples and presets. Took me three days to tag them all mind.

^^ this. it works instantly for me with pre-scanned folders.

What version of Cubase are you using? They changed the way it scans from 4.5 onwards, so even if the folder is pre-scanned, it doesn't audition the file until the waveform image is loaded, so there's a 0.5-1 second pause in between clicking a file and hearing a preview. In 4.1 and earlier, it previews the file before it loads the image, so it's instant.
