DrGatineau wrote:I know this is quite unpopular and I'm not trying to change anyone's mind but to be completely honest... i'm still not quite sold on Gantz and Las, being "the best in the scene" or making music that's "truest to the original sound" or whatever.

No doubt I definitely think they're both talented artists. I like many of their tunes quite a bit - Baby Face & Spry Sinister from Gantz and Las's Innamind bits (eg Witch Doctor, Your Eyes) as well as his System bits (Malfunktions, Backyard). Las's 130-ish tunes on Signal Life actually stick out to me a little more (Lowout & Liketha), but I wouldn't consider it the "best music" or "best dubstep being made right now."

They definitely make quality music and I love and appreciate that but I don's think they're any "better" or "more original sounding" than artists like Kahn/Gorgon, Ishan, Commodo, Jack Sparrow, Goth Trad, Vivek, Silkie, Kromestar, Nomine, Kaiju, Grenier, Skeptical, Thelem, and even Truth & J:Kenzo despite how unpopular they are, who are all making quality music these days imo.

Maybe I'll grow to love it though. I've found that there are several artists I didn't like at first listen or even for a while that I grew to love after time passed, so who knows.
I don't beleive either Truth or J:Kenzo are unpopular, Truth have consistently smashed up the dance whenever I've seen them and are always getting booked on wicked lineups (production-wise I find them pretty hit and miss though tbh) and J:Kenzo has one of the most popular shows on Rinse and runs 2 of the best labels around at the moment, I would definitely say both are very popular, I wouldn't take people's "cooler than thou" opinions on here as an accurate representation of somethings popularity dude

Also Gantz is definitely not "true to the original sound" at all, his stuff is well different, particularly his more recent bits have been really abstract compared to the classic dubstep sound, whatever that is

Can relate their popularity/sound to the wider context of 140 trends imo

Dungeon blew up: clinical mixdowns, straight drums, reese wankery, samey darky/techy atmospheres and predictable structures. Some great tunes & producers came out of it but it got over-saturated & stale.

Reaction to it in Las & Gantz's popularity (as prime examples): warmer/ruffer sounding mixdowns, wonky drums, simpler/detuned synths (if any leads are used really), emphasis either on roots/old school samples or mwad Eastern/World samples/percs. Became fucking well appreciated alongside nights like System.

Can see this 'wonkier' movement getting saturated already though (looking at Vampires, new Sleeper bits etc)

Hard tunes in both camps tbf

my issue is liking something because something else is over-saturated. music should be judged solely on the music itself in my opinion, always. i'm not gonna dislike a tune just cause it was made by a certain unpopular producer or because someone calls it "dungeon". and when i see people doing that, imo, they're lying to themselves. and i'm not gonna like a tune more than i naturally would have just because it's made by Las, that would also be lying to yourself.

to relate it back to my original point, i am completely open to that type of dubstep/music, what you are calling 'wonky', and I think it's possible for tunes of that style to be some of the best dubstep tunes ever, I just don't think they've been made yet, and I'm not gonna give Baby Face extra points cause it's not whatever sub-sub-sub-genre is now popular to ber8 this week. i still think Urban Gorilla is a better tune.

though yes I can't disagree that lots of music people call 'dungeon' is not doing it for me and extremely samey these days. but i still think people are ignoring producers who simply make dubstep - most of the ones I named in my original post - Kahn/Gorgon, Ishan, Commodo, Jack Sparrow, Goth Trad, Vivek, Silkie, Kromestar, Nomine, Kaiju, Grenier and others. if you think it's "wonky vs. dungeon", that's a false choice.

i think everyone gets my philosophy at this point, probably time to talk about it less
