Picked it up a while ago, wish I hadn't left it this long to read it. It been a good read so far and is probably one of the better books I've read on subject. If I remember correctly, she was one of the original proponents of M-theory. Seems to be a pretty good communicator, pity she doesn't seem to be generally as well known as the other physics bods.

Also, I find her vaguely hawt!
Lemme know how it is... looks good!
Finally finished it! It was pretty good. What I liked about it is that it goes into a bit more detail than most popular science books. Almost like it was halfway between a popular science book and a textbook. Explanations were generally decent, although there were a few bits here and there which were a bit hazy. Uses a lot of analogies to help describe things which helps. Downside is that it was a bit repetitive in places, where she just repeats the same point again and again within a short space, I think it's fairly clear that she wrote bits of it a different times. So probably could've done with slightly better editing. Not gonna hold that against the book though!

That's an epic book.

If you like it, get this:

it's brilliant. Loads of shortish things, mad stories like soloing the first winter ascent of the 2400m traverse of the Creag Meagaidh Crab Crawl, doing the first winter traverse of the Black Cuillin with one of the climbers so hung over after an impromptu ceilidh in the Clachaig that he keeps throwing up on the first pitches, having to back off the Eigerwand with Don Whillans, the competition for the first winter ascent of Zero Gully, some cool Himalayan stuff. Good selection of humorous articles and songs at the end as well.

I've just finished rereading Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino and am looking at the stacks of unread books in our house wondering what to read next.

Highly recommended...
This one has been on my shortlist for ages, almost bought it once but the tagline on the cover turned me off, it's like a bad action movie. Yeah, I know the old saying...
Yeah, I avoided it a little while because of that... thought it would be a bit "Ross Kempy On Gangs", but he seems a really decent bloke. Reminds me a bit of Louix Theroux.

Read Naked Lunch a while ago and loved it. This one is way less chaotic and confusing while keeping a very artistic writing style. It's also a novella, way shorter and easier to read than Naked Lunch.

Ghost of Chance revolves around the destruction of ancient nature by man and how life will take it's revenge. It's a very powerful and sad text, full of beauty and hatred. Probably my favorite book ever...

ha, nice timing, just picked this up used for 2 bucks the other day, I opened it up on some random page and fell in love with what I was reading, read lots of Burroughs (like 10 years back), but had never even heard of this one...

You'll love it, I guaranty you.

Do you have any other suggestion for Burroughs? I have Naked Lunch that I already read, Soft Machine that I'll soon read, and the place of dead roads (will need the first and third book of the trilogy before I start reading it).
