Alright Abletonians, I've got a question for you:
Is there a way to play a midi clip that is triggering a sampler, and also simultaneously play the sampler with a midi keyboard, while NOT recording?
Right now, I've got a loop going, and can't simultaneously hear the loop and play the sampler without recording...
PLEASE god tell me there is a way to do this.
Sorry for the ignorance. Demo'ed live a couple of years ago, but I think I programmed everything?

Yeah. Just make sure you don't have overdub turned on (OVR button in the transport controls up top).

Wait, I turn off, the OVR, and turn on the track record enable? Oh wait. Yeah. Maybe it is coming back to me. Thanks!

Yep, arm the track and as long as global record or overdub are not on, it won't record midi data to the clip.

Haha! As a friend of mind would say (in a sing song voice) "embarrassing!"
Really appreciate it.

Side question:
Do y'all think live 9 will be a huge departure from 8, or will it be evolutionary? Whats up with the apc40 in Live 9... will there be a new APC for 9 with new functionality? In your opinions of course!

I'm not sure about 9, they seem to be taking their time. It's been what... three years already?
I sure hope they address a lot of the little things that have been bugging people for a couple of versions. But I don't think 9 will be a radical change from what 8 is. Just more features and bug fixes. But I may be wrong, who knows? We'll find out when they announce it.

It has been so long, probably been occupied with max for live, hardware integration... but it has been long. Maybe a total rewrite? Any educated guesses on the 9 release date?

so is there any particular guide to rewiring into ableton or suite 8? Ive got suite 8 and reason 4. I've had a time trying it and some said it was not necessarily easy, so anyone got tips?

i think they are gonna wait to see what bitwig has to offer and try to outdo them.

Here's a quote from Ableton regarding Bitwig. Someone posted it on the Ableton forum, may or may not be real, can't say.
It seems to me that we're not doing anything differently than Bitwig. Just like them, we spend a lot of time working on the next version (the first in their case), and when we feel we're ready, we announce it and then it takes a little while before the actual release. For 3 years, Bitwig said no word about what their software would do, just like Ableton has always done. I see little difference here!
Believe me, we're not asleep! A lot of us would just love to tell you guys about Live 9, because it will be a kick-ass release. It's a little frustrating for us as well, but that's the game. On the other hand, Bitwig just announced their software, which they've been working hard on for a long time, so it's only fair that they get their share of attention now.
However you're right on one point: we do welcome competition! We've been sitting alone in our market segment for a very long time, and there's nothing better than competition to wake you up and release the good creative energy, and boy do we have that in store! We're very much looking forward to competing on features, user benefit and innovation, but please bear with us if we choose not to play the Internet-buzz game, because it's not in our values and we're working hard on stuff that matters instead.
Let's wait for Bitwig Studio to be released, and may the best product win!

Jelly partners,
Uhm, so I've got a drum pattern with a hat line that I'd like to groove quantize, like I'd like to just groove quantize the hats.
Is there anyway to do this in ableton? I know if flstudio, you can select just your hat line in the piano roll, and then quantize just selected notes. Seeming like not possible in ableton? Thinking the easiest way is just to make another miditrack with the hats in there, group it with my main drum track, send the midi from the new hat track to my main drum track, and then quantize the new hat track... is there anyway easier? Again apologies for the ableton newbishness.

As far as I know, that's the only way :S not optimal.

You can do normal quantizing by selecting the notes in the piano roll, but I'm not sure about the groove quantizing. I will have to test this out. It seems like you should be able to. But yeah, if you can't, just put your hi-hats into a different clip and groove quantize that.

well you can just select and quantise notes in the clip, groove quantising you need to open the groove pool, select groove you want apply to clip and then you adjust level of groove quantisation. reading manual on the groove function in ableton 8 is worth doing, that all got a massive overhaul in this version.

Don't want to apply to the whole clip, just selected notes.

just highlight the notes and right click quantise if thats what you meant, or just turn off the grid and make your own groove

this gonna sound dumb as shit, but i have a couple questions about midi controllers
1) everytime i turn on ableton i have to toggle on/off my device before it's recognized, way around that?
2) how do you switch your controller between synths, i can't figure out how to switch it from the last one i created,
ex] i make a drum pattern w/ impulse and then make a synth w] analog, but now i can't play the impulse with my keyboard, it just plays the analog
these been bugging me a lot, just inconvinient really, any help would be great

You have to click that bottom little button underneath the solo button. It is the record enable button, it should turn red when engaged. This will send midi to that channel. Just make sure that your OVR button is not on at the top of the interface (Yellow), if it is, and live is playing, you'll record into that channel.
