Thanks for tips dude
I'm not really trying to emulate anyone, I'm going with my style

Care to share any info on the 2nd one Photon? Reminds me of a KOAN track, but I can't remember which.

Fuck man, this hollow sounding growl is so BIG. I think this is the 2nd time you posted it too, please for the love of god share details.
I was listening to eastern thug by KOAN Sound on the bus ride home and realized how dynamic the Growl/Reese is. So I tried to remake it. I think the only thing its really missing is some loudness/mastering sound to make it more upfront.
I wanna get your guys's thoughts on this. I didn't really know the correct notes for any of this and kind of guessed from memory, didn't listen to the song at all during making this.
Yes, I also posted this in the reese thread as well, as the processing kind of fits both basses

Yeah man. Please do. And even a screen shot as well (if the FX chain or the bass itself is complicated or long to explain)

Okay for that growl I used FM8 and the FM matrix along with the waveforms of each can be seen here
For the growl I simply automated how much Z modulated A, however, a lot of the growl sound came from iZotope Trash's distortion. I also did some EQ modulation.
My EQ settings, and Trash settings are shown here
Just automate the first peak up and down for vowel movement along with the automation of FM and you will have that sound.
Hope I helped!:)

Thanks for the info Photon, gonna play with FM8.
At the drop here I've got some growly/squalchy basses - trying to make them better... any ideas?

They sound a little weak in the mix, try bringing other stuff down and bringing them, along with the rest of your melody/bassline out a bit more. Try distorting the highs a bit and saturating the lows

Use a performer without restart instead of an envelope on that bass

Straight out of FM8 with no external FX or plugins... not even EQ automation :O

I found out that you technically don't need EQ automation as you can make the vowel shapes using FM instead. A great tip is to watch the spectrum on FM8 while making it.

You have no plugins on that bad boy?
That must be a hell of a patch is it layered?
How did you make it?
What do you think of my patchs here? -

Straight out of massive layered with very low volume animal growl samples ripped off youtube. I'm sure if I layered some crappy fm8 patch I could get a similiar effect but I find that a low volume actual growl adds a nice organic tone to it.

Massive patch below. I'm using zero FX, bar an EQ, and I'm sure you can do some fun stuff with that too!
The two bandpass filters working in opposite directions produce amazing movement, and I use it a lot on reeses too - just tweak the time and envelope of that to taste really. But it's a nice way of making growls that are a little different.

Soundcloud Here's my attempt. I used FM8 with too many plugins lol, but i think it's quite close!

Damn if you brought that out in your mix a bit, added some light distortion and a sub bass that could be sounding really sick

This is all you need. It is actually a surprisingly simple patch.
Just automate the amount of modulation going into E and automate the pitch. Also add some distortion and saturation to seriously beef it up:D

Oh I already knew that kind of fm8 growl, I thought you did something new I could learn from lol, try having a sine wave at 16 ratio modulating the triangle wave by a small amount to add high harmonics to the bass.

There is something you can learn from it actually. Say you have an 8th formant on it's own, it peaks at the 8th fundamental. As we already know, vowel sounds usually have two or even three peaks (F1, F2, F3). When you modulate this formant by a triangle wave as i have done, it splits the formant into two peaks. This creates the vowel sound.
When you automate the amount of modulation, the two peaks come closer together and further apart as you automate it. I think this is what that smile guy was implying when he was talking about double resonants and stuff.
My objective is to use this information, and expand on the basic formant modulated by triangle kind of growl. If i have this vowellyness but with a different timbre we can make some sick growls.
Also for gnarlier growls you can change the formant to a lower fundamental like 6th or 4th.
