Decided to put the simple Triangle ---> Formant growl in context. This growl is similar although the triangle is being modulated by a ramp wave. This seems to morph the formant, which is exactly what i'm aiming for. However, it makes the sound a bit hard to work with. Anyways listen:
Here's a song I'm working on, I'm pretty happy with the growls I got. They start at about :42 Soundcloud

Those are really nice sounding, but not quite as deep as I like them personally. How'd you go about synthesizing that?

Thanks!
It's made in Massive with a Grain II set to Bend + with a double notch filter and LFOs on the wavetable position, intensity and filter cutoff, and a couple fx.

I like those! kinda unrelated, but how did you make that high pitched synth in there?

Extremely simple Sylenth1 patch consisting of one saw osc with 8 voices and a high amount of detune. Controlled the pitch with simple automation:)

This is really great. I've been doing something similar with stuff I've been making lately with FM8. What I do though is in between layers of distortion, I automate bandpass filters to catch the peaks of the formant. Really makes the vowel stand out while getting the tone a lot better
There's a few things i've learned to give a growl that really edgy grit.
1) Flangers. Holy fuck. Just play a note, add a flanger, and bounce out like 4-5 cuts of that one note. Gives it that swing, and you can basically just play around with the rhythm on its own.
2) Vocodex (For FL users). This just adds so much dynamics to the sound. If you have it, I suggest you abuse it heavily.
3) Sharp EQ. Nothing brings out that bite in a vowel on a growl more than the sweet titillation of raising mid-high end frequencies.

I did some growl.
Tons of layering, FX, one heavy kick, widened the hell out of it, got this. I don't know if it's any good or not but I think it's not too bad, feedback?
Haha, well I did not use Modern talking at all, in fact I used one instance of massive layered with a bunch of different synths, a sub and some mechanical sound FX. And no, that one Massive instance was not using Modern Talking.

Sounds great! Care to share more specifics about the creation?

I think I'm the only crazy one who gone through this whole thread from page 1 to page 79... And will do this again in the summer, heaps of heavy stuff! Next-up: Reese Bass Thread!
p.s: going to post some growls I've learned from this thread soon

If modern talking wasn't used, you certainly took the long route to that particular sound.
@ephyks: that growl is nicely balanced and unique. Good job.

Saw this earlier. Probably the greatest sound I have EVER seen in an fm8 youtube video.
Gonna have a go at recreating that now, we'll see what happens.

Yeah, he's fantastic. Have been listening to his soundcloud alot recently after I found that tutorial, his growls are sick!
Does he have any plans on making any more fm8 tutorials anytime soon?
Oh and what's the name of the producers group btw?
