Currently watching Macross Frontier, pretty fresh one, it's still showing over in Japan. It's kinda like one of those 'anime as a genre, not a medium' kinda series. It's got all the right ingredients for a macross series; transforming mecha/jet fights (rendered in cgi but breathtakingly staged and well blended in with the traditional animation style); pop idols bringing peace to the masses through music; love triangles all over the shop and great animation and design. Recommended if you're into multi layered series about mankinds exploration into space in bio-dome type spaceships and encounters with biological mecha type-things.

Prepare to despair.

Dragonball live action movie screenshots:

This looks TERRIBLE. I know they got the guy who plays Spike in Buffy to play Piccolo but WHY THE FUCK DOES HE LOOK LIKE A VAMPIRE???!!!!

Also, Chow Yun Fat is just about the worst Master Roshi I could possibly conceive. Where's the bald head, the beard and the subglasses. A Hawaian shirts is not his signature trait. He doesn't look even slightly perverted either.

I'm currently writing a book review for an essay at Uni on Anime. The book's called, 'Anime: from Akira to Princess Mononoke, Experiencing Contemporary Japanese Animation'. Fascinating stuff. I've never enjoyed academic reading so much.

On the actual anime tip, finally finished Macross Frontier, now tucking into the episodes of Mushishi i never got round to watching (seriously, one of the best series ever, don't know why i stalled). Not sure what to start after that though. Currently thinking either Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann or this new series called Eve No Jikan (Time of Eve). The art style/atmosphere looks right up my street:

wow, time of eve looks great.

im watching death note atm but it doesn't seem to be living up to the hype. Some really shit plot devices ("oh yes i forgot its your first day, let me explain everything") and a bit ott and americanised, some clever bits tho.

deffo agree with you on death note. overrated but worth a watch nonetheless as there are still some great moments. completely loses the plot from time to time tho.

also watched this a couplea months back. think you summed it up quite well there, though it did start to get a bit dull after a while.

Dattebayo are stopping fansubbing Naruto from 15th Jan!!!!!! This is horrendous news. Does anyone know of an alternative fansubber of reasonable quality??

Watched Gurren Lagaan the other week because of this thread. Good thread this :)
Cheers guys.
Does it piss anyone else off when they keep adding explanations of words etc. on the top of the screen for like a split second!? whats the point.....

It's probably coz you're watching a fansub? Some fansubbing groups pride themselves on being able to translate and provide references to Japanese culture and words... Can't think of an example offhand, but it does crop up.

Thankfully, most sub groups keep these explanations as brief as possible and without imposing too much on your screen. Any man and his dog can fansub these days with a minimum of software and japanese knowledge, it seems. Some attempts are really THAT bad.

All that said, I love fansubs to death and wouldn't stop watching them. To the above poster who wrote about Naruto not being subbed by dattebayo anymore, I'd probably drop Naruto. I've watched up to and a small part of Shipuuden and it's just far too fillertastic to contemplate going on. I find a nice 26 episode series is generally enough to get a good story told well.

An anime thread in a dubstep forum. Mm, tailor made for myself

(Edit: Soul Eater is where it's at these days, not Konoha Village, surely? )

:o :o :o DROP NARUTO??? :o :o :o
Seriously, the last couple of months of naruto have been some of the best ever and it seems like it's gonna continue in the same vein from hereon (on episode 90 now). I've never had the displeasure of watching any filler so I'm lucky enough to have had nothing but good stuff. I agree with you on how 26 episode series can fit in a good story but it's all about having a couple of ever present soap opera-like series on the go as well.
