The extreme rhetoric that comes out of american polititians/pundits mouths is quite frightening. I imagine some people are easily influenced by such inciteful commentary.
what's scary is that people think of these opinion shows as actual news and the sway that people like say glenn beck, bill oreilly, rush limbaugh, ann coulter etc who toss about hate speech, thinly veiled racism (or just blatent sometimes) are almost a sort of celebrity status among their fans who often see them as doing no wrong. hell my dad is one of them and it's like talking to a brick wall when it comes to talking about any issues they cover, and he's just like a tape recorder spewing back the same crap they say.
heaven forbid a NEWS channel actually presents unbiased facts and news and leaves it up to the viewer to form their own opinions, rather than hours of opinion and commentary shows to the public

This woman's personal beliefs and practices when it comes to gun policy has nothing to do with the discussion regarding guns. It could have been Michael Moore or Sarah Palin and it would (or should) still warrant this same discussion.

this does seem to be the case...

for an outsider, american politics seem ridiculously polarized. what makes it extra weird is that these extremes rally around parties that are so close on the politial spectrum.

Regardless there's little doubt in my mind that the fear-mongering from the right media contributed to this. Will this change anything? Sadly, probably not.

I think it had more to do with the guy being certifiable, but that's just me.
Bingo.

Two years before the Tucson massacre, the Department of Homeland Security warned in a report that right wing extremism was on the rise and could prompt "lone wolves" to launch attacks. But the agency backed away from the report amid intense criticism from Republicans, including future House Speaker John Boehner.

The report, which warned that the crippled economy and the election of the first black president were “unique drivers for rightwing radicalization and recruitment,” described the rise of “lone wolves and small terrorist cells embracing violent rightwing extremist ideology [as] the most dangerous domestic terrorism threat in the United States.”
