It's a lot on the minimal side with a lot of automation doing the majority of the variation. For those interested here's a few things I did to get the sound:-
- The percussion (bongos etc) were played in through a sampler and then bounced to audio, parallel filtered through several different plugins and then bounced down again. (They must have gone through at least 8 different filters doing different things by the end of it.
- The kick is being sent to a delay which is being sidechained to the kick with another filter on it (this is automated into the intro by volume)
- Several delays and reverbs are automated through on the percussion and lead arpeggio thing.
- Bass was very simple, coupla squares sent to filters and distortion etc.
- A lot of sidechaining to everything, some things (like bass were sidechained harder with the lead instruments being compressed only slightly.
- The track I find to getting a grittier sound is using lots of layers of subtle filtering and distortion to make things sound more analogue.
- Oh yeah Chorus on the percussion as well, that seemed to help quite a bit.
- Having my sounds too clinical I've been told is one of my bigger weaknesses so focussing quite a bit on sorting this atm. Hopefully there's something in there for people who suffer the same problem.

Re: Techno & House Production Thread
Does anyone have any ideas on the stab sound that comes in around the 1.00 mark.
I'm getting detuned squares and white noise but there's something missing...

Although that breathing lead is more of a Spektre sound.

Re: Techno & House Production Thread
I would guess the drums are som old Roland drum machine. Can be 909, 808, 707 or 606, for instance. Sounds like he's automating the sustain of the hats and shakers to increase the perceived intensity and energy through some parts of the track.rafaelrafael wrote:

The stabs are pretty standard. Just a variation of the dub stab. You can find tutorials for them all over he net.
Should be either saw or square waves or a combination. Make a regular stab and link it to a low pass filter set to no attack, no sustain, 400-800 ms decay and 0-800ms release.
The amp envelope should have no attack, full sustain, and same decay and release as the filter. This is pretty much the way I start all my dub stabs before I experiment.
The rapid stab which plays the lower, kind of muffled sounds, sounds like it has a bit of attack on the filter. It's def band passed to get that hollow sounds. Try setting the bandpass filter to around 300-700 hz or somewhere close. It's also has a delay effect. Put it on a send or as an insert. If you set the delay as an insert, you may want to try to put in before the band pass filter in the effect chain, to really mold the initial stab with the delay. Add reverb to taste. Sounds like dark reverb though, and should therefore be relatively short to not make things muddy.
The other, less frequent, and brighter stab is not delayed. Would guess it's pure squarewaves to get that thin sound. It has a longer amp release and longer ADSR envelope on the low pass filter (although no filter attack). Band pass to around 700-1200 hz to and use a longer, brighter reverb setting to set it apart from the other stab.

Basically, what I want to know is what is going on with Sheds kick drums...
I have no idea where to start with the low end.

Reverb, like, get reverb from the kick, and then like EQ it, distort it maybe.Drop_Dead wrote:Basically, what I want to know is what is going on with Sheds kick drums...

Re: Techno & House Production Thread
Ezzz that is some nice vibe going on. I'd say the kick is something to work on, I know with this stuff the sounds are a bit more subtle but still think that kick could cut through a bit more, is it sidechain compressing anything else? even with tech it's nice to have it pumping subtly even if it isn't audible just to add to the feel.ascent wrote:tune I been working on on this tip
