i love all the apathy in this thread. no really, its fucking hilarious.
this entitlement generation coming up right now is totally fucked. the whole concept of property to this generation, is backwards. its not your property, just because you have access and can consume it!!!!

@garethom

ever asked yourself how someone without a credit card/paypal can even buy a song off beatport? they may have 79p in their palms but how do they send it to the artist?
because their currency isn't digital, and your data isn't physical. what happens if they don't live near a store where they can pay for an itunes download and then top up their ipod?
what about if they're 15 years old and don't have a bank account?
maybe you should create a pre-paid system so they can buy your music? maybe some of us are already working on it

how about we do focus on the show aspect of music? me and my dubstep/thing band are making our first EP now
will we care if people pirate our music? not particularly
we make enough money through covers/recording/teaching/blah that our band will run alright anyway

in all honesty our music will sound worse on record than it will live anyway. does that mean we don't want any money at all?
of course not. we'll simply set up a "pay what you want" and if people want to pay they can, and if they don't or can't then that is fine as well
if people spread it round to their mates and we get 20,000 plays on youtube then it's worth the sacrifice

i'd rather get our first album played on radio one and sync'd in various media

maybe i'm entirely mad though, i really think i must have lost or gained a few chromosomes because right now i can't understand how people who are obviously intelligent have such a problem with "illegal downloading"

Price and demand for live shows have been going up at the same time for a decade now. If you're going into music with an itch for cash, refusing to play live is dumb.

I know a lot about "Pay what you like". My net label is founded entirely on that basis (although the releases still turn up on filesharing sites  ) but I don't think that just because we're cool with that method, then we should expect everyone to be like that.

I dunno, I just feel like artists should be rewarded for ALL their efforts, whether that be producing or playing out. I'm not cool with an album that could've been years in the making becoming a mere advert to some people.

Like I say, it's cool for some people, but we shouldn't expect everyone to be cool that their months of solid work has been taken for free and they're struggling to pay the bills.

that's fair, and i'm not saying that i don't feel for people who are struggling
but at the same time me and my friends have been learning our instruments for 15+ years, worked our butts off, plowed tens of thousands of pounds between us into lessons, gear, instruments, because of our drive and commitment to music we will reap the rewards, but that doesn't mean we haven't struggled with unemployment, lack of funds, i mean we come from the isle of wight ffs! awful place for the youth in general

we were patient enough to watch dubstep contaminate popular music and now we're ready to get going

we've got 50something midi files finished, most of them will never be released but we've been practicing for 4+ years now, just messing around and learning without releasing a thing
so i'm sorry if i don't feel guilty about pirating music, but quite frankly i haven't even listened to a new dubstep release in years, i still listen to the same stuff i did in 2007 (except a bit of reso & joker)

anyway i need to go get crunked up because all my intelligent mates are going back to uni next week, enjoy

I buy pretty much everything I like on vinyl, as long as I can find it.
If I can't buy the vinyl/there's no vinyl release, I sometimes buy the CD if it's an artist/group that I really think needs my support/money.
I don't buy digital since I don't have a credit card or paypal.

I do download stuff illegally, but that's if I can't get the vinyl (I pirated Kryptic Minds - Badman for example but I would immediately buy it if I saw it in a record store)

Funny that people are like "ooh I care too much about music to buy everything I want."

If you really care you'll spend more money on buying records and less on everything. I'll not drink for a bit so I can spend the money on records instead. I don't buy clothes often, I don't waste all my money on drugs. So I can buy more vinyl.

Also, have some fucking quality control. There's more music that I want than I can afford but really I don't mind. I buy the shit I care about and still have too much to listen to if I'm honest.

Why do people feel they're entitled to music? Someone else has put money and time into it and all you wanna do is download it and listen to it on your shitty ipod a couple times and forget about it. It's not just that you're not supporting the artist it's like you don't even give a fuck about it in general. How much do you guys just sit and listen to music? I actually have nights where I'll listen to a whole band's discography in one go sometimes with out doing anything else. Sure I could have torrented it all. But I'd rather have bought all the records over the years and played them all the time before doing it. Honestly on the rare occasion I have downloaded music that's been to rare to buy I've barely gave a fuck about it.

Everything else people will pay money for too that's bullshit.

For example drugs and poncey expensive clothes. Why the fuck is that worth your money but when I say I like to pay for a cd that will possibly give me a lifetime of enjoyment people act like I'm being all weird and on my high horse about shit. I've got albums I've been listening to for over 15 years now. I reckon paying someone for creating something like that seems fair

And how do you make that connection? And what happened to supporting the artist?

That's precisely what's happening. You even made the point yourself at the end of your paragraph.

the truly underlying fact IS: the industry and some people are enforcing something that the majority don't want, which is to pay for digital music. if the option is there, why would you not just download it and save money. if you could download a car and a house, i guarantee none of you would say "no all those CEOs, workers, engineers need their money". id be the first to click that link.

And we're the ones with the bad attitudes

Is it possible for you guys to make an argument without grossly generalizing, and committing straw man left and right?
