word. diablo 1 is still the king for this imo. even standing around in town with that music used to creep me outfinji wrote:Path of Exile looks better than Torchlight imo, really dont dig the cartoony graphics, i want some grim ass shit.

Based on the success of the first game and the beta, I don't see that happening. It's gonna ride the "diablo 3 sucks" train all the way to the bank.pkay wrote:yeah but they have a new parent company and historically asian companies backing US studios has resulted in absolutely terrible games especially when touching on mmo aspects. The asian market has no clue how to make MMO style games (torchlight is somehwhat an mmorts/adventure like D3). Point being I'd bring a life jacket as the odds of torchlight sinking to the bottom of the ocean week one are pretty good. See everything NCSoft has shat out minus GW series

not sure what you're basing the term "success" on. It wasn't a critical success in the slightest. It wasn't an artistic success as it was less than stellar. It wasn't a technological success as there wasn't any innovation or use of any new techniques. It wasn't a market success. It sold a little over a million copies in the life of its existence. 80% of which came after a price reduction on an already low selling point. It wasn't a financial success either. From what I've heard it made money but not much. It was originally slated for a 300% profit, it made somewhere in the area of 40%.
Given the pedigree of the game it didn't meet expectations. People hoped it to be the next big revelation in rts/adventure gaming and it turned out to be a diablo clone by the dudes who made diablo. It was just "OK" pretty much all across the board.
If they pull a mediocre game this time it will be the death of Runic. This time around they have a larger budget, larger studio, more workers, more money invested.
Also add to the fact they've fucked around and delayed this game far too much. If they don't release by end of October they are going to get absolutely obliterated by the new Neverwinter game which is everything Torchlight 2 wishes they could be. Neverwinter looked amazing at all the conventions this year. I fully expect it to be the standard for adventure/multiplayer games for a few years to come and anyone who would be slightly interested in Torchlight knows who and what Neverwinter is. I can guarantee you the dudes at Runic are staying up at night realizing they've fucked around and they could get crushed into the discount download page pretty quickly if they dont get this game out fucking fast.

no its just called Neverwinter
Re: diablo 3
Nahhhhhh. For starters, Neverwinter is a straight up 3rd person MMORPG whereas Torchlight 2 has gone out of its way to point out its offline mode. They're two completely separate genres. If any game is gonna be cause Torchlight 2 problems this fall, I would imagine it's gonna be Borderlands 2. As for the quality of the game itself, just watch videos from the beta that ended a few months ago.pkay wrote:collige wrote:Based on the success of the first game and the beta, I don't see that happening. Re: diablo 3
regardless of our fanboy opinions the fact is Diablo 3 is on pace to be the best selling PC game ever. It sold 6.3 million copies week one. It broke top ten sales figures in one week. It will eventually sell over 20 million copies. Likely by this time in 2014. Torchlight could give the game away for free and would never get half that many players.
It's the Avatar of video games made by the James Cameron of video game developers. The only game and I mean the only game that will ever come close to these type of figures on the PC will be Half-Life 3 and rumors are at this point they were never working on it and that the "game" they were working on is actually a movie

diablo 3 has sold twice as many copies in 2 months than diablo 1 and 2 and expansion combined over the course of a decade. So I'm calling bullshit. The odds of Diablo 3 developing 8.8 million players who didnt play diablo one and two is just fucking comical.
Having worked for a few video game companies, the angriest players or the most vocal still play the game.... religiously even. We saw a dude who had shit all over DAO2 via xbl and found he had over 220 hours played on the game less than one month in. Angry fanboys are still fanboys.

Re: diablo 3
You have to buy a game and play if before you can hate it, stupid fuck. Millions bought it thinking it'd be d2 with better graphics and it ended up being a fancy random number generator.

Re: diablo 3
well soon they'll be competing with torchlight 2, path of exile and grim dawn
and why would i buy it when i played the beta for free and it was broken as hell then? they essentially launched the game as a rushed beta and are still trying to patch it to releasable quality.

Re: diablo 3
did you play torchlight one? it was insanely unstable for the first 2 months and if you knew what you were doing with stats laughably easy
\\
i dont think anyone at blizzard is losing a wink of sleep over torchlight 2. Its great internet hype for fanboys but fanboys dont realize that producers dont make games great. Development teams make great games. Runic is swimming in the deep end now and they dont have the studio to produce a top tier game. Reality

Re: diablo 3
yea and the team that made diablo so great (blizzard north) has been gone for awhile now making these competing games, which is why the team who made 3 lost the plot as to what made the previous games so fun and addictive and are scrambling to patch it
hell look at how maturely they handled brevik commenting on d3, i believe wilson has a public apology due to that debacle
like i said it's more than just torchlight they'll be competing with
grim dawn which is by the same team who did titan quest
path of exile
marvel heroes which is brevik's latest forray

the bnet forums from the day the game came out til... i dunno, whenever i stopped playing, in mid june i think. it was universally shit upon by 99% of the user base. asinine story, terrible itemization, boring and cartoony art design, etc.epochalypso wrote:where do you get this shit?deadly habit wrote:the problem being the core audience that loved diablo 1 and 2 hate 3 for the most part
