I'd say there's a lot of factors at play, but the biggest ones I can think of are:
1. Lack of role models - When there isn't a mentor of the same sex it can be hard to become interested in something. For example, in Canada science classes universities used to have predominantly male populations. In Alberta, and I'm sure other provinces as well, they instituted the "Minerva Project" to provide role models to women who were interested in science in high school (summer camps, female speakers at assemblies, etc.). Fast forward 15 years and women now outnumber men in pretty much all university classes (including my medicine class). There were also social things going on, but a large part was due to this project I'd say.
2. Different motivations - I know countless individuals who got into DJing to get some tail. Of course that's not everyones motivation, but most "weeknight/weekend" resident DJs I've met fit into this category.
3. Different life goals - Here I've noticed that women tend to have significantly different life goals than men (and this varies by region as well). For example, the few occasions I still get out, the male age group typically spans 18-35 while it appears the female age group is pretty much 20-25 (save for the Cougars going hard). If you look at most of the successful DJs now, most of them are in that 30+ age range (there's a few that pop up under then, but they're usually short lived). It takes a long time to hone the skills of DJing/producing and to carve a niche out. Most women, by the time they hit 30, have made the decision that "yeah I'm going to have kids" or "naw I'm going to focus on my career." It's getting less and less like this, but it's still a huge factor whenever you look at sex employment rates across the board.
It'd be cool to see more female DJs, and I feel like there are less barriers in an underground scene as the focus is more on the music than on the person. There's still barriers, but it's going to be up to the individual to cross the barriers themselves. My favourite quote from DBT therapy is "It's not your fault that your life sucks, but it is your responsibility to fix it." (Slightly paraphrased, but powerful none the less).

i'm all for equal opportunities and of course equal rights... being a woman has never been easy, or as easy as being a man, historically speaking
but to walk around pretending that there aren't gender roles in societies, or that gender roles are inherently wrong, is fucking ridiculous.
women are child-bearers... they have tits and get pregnant.. they are the "fairer sex" .. its more hard wired to their nature thru simple biology that they occupy a particular role in the family, community, and society at large.
men have more mobility across roles and occupations. Men have a more competitive drive against other men and our main driving force is to plant our sperm in womens' uteri.
obviously men aren't inherently more creative, talented or more deserving of certain roles. but it isn't hard to hypothesize why things turned out the way they did after millennia of human evolution.
It's about choice... all people, all women should be allowed choices about how to live their lives. But it's not exactly a secret as to why fewer women take on professional roles in entertainment or really any field. The proportion of women who embrace their role as a man's woman, a mother, a wife, etc. is higher than the proportion of men who embrace a role as a woman's man, or a man's man, or a child-nurturer, or elementary school teacher, etc.
I'm not saying that's the way it should be .. but come on, are we gonna sit here saying "gosh, i wonder WHY the entertainment scene is dominated by male acts, male producers, male executives..
i wonder WHY the role of women here is "hot club promoter" "bottle service" or "go-go dancer"
cuz that's life. You want to be the exception to the rule that's awesome and pret ty much next to NOBODY is against you .. in fact, we're all rooting for that woman. She's as welcome as any man.
it just ain't a mystery why she's rare.

I am so completely devoid of competativeness...and all the posturing that goes with it
That's not a lack of confidence - that is lack of blood thirst.
well - maybe it's lack of confidence - in light of the driving blood thirst.
Just because I'm not driven to be supermackdj doesn't mean that I don't want to do it.
Can it be a source of pleasure and not an excercise in sudden death..

Yes, but one could argue that it is now much easier.

OP: Feminine? Or "feminist"? There is a difference.
I could talk at length about this... I have a degree in gender & women's studies and work at a rape crisis center... also keep a pro-feminist blog.
But I don't feel like debunking biological determinism atm... it's important to have an understanding of gender roles / socialization of gender as it pertains to your particular culture.

That's a good one Genevieve - You should try doing anything with a hormone induced tension headache...
On the real though -
I was a trainer at Amazon.com - That means I was in charge of half of production using the new hires...
They chose the 2 most unthreatening people in the warehouse to train - a black gay guy and myself...
On the international shipping line - boxes needed to be weighed for airtransport - the rules were strict...because you could down a plane.
- but we only had one scale at the front of the line - that needed to be used BEFORE the stuffing went into the boxes...
So someone devised this incredibly inacurate method for adding weight based on the size of the box...
None of my new hires could do it properly - because they barely knew how to do it at all...so I made them round up
Because if a plane is going to crash - it's not going to be because I was stingy with the measurements...
So every so many days I would get yelled at - for over compensating...
The key is - That they just would not listen to what I was saying..
- just like men do when they aren't listening to their wives or daughters.
And after awhile it turned nasty...
So finally after like - 2 months of drag down arguements -- They put one of their "respected" guys on the back of my line...
He observed - talked to me about it - pondered and after like 2 days - told them we needed another scale...
It was done by the end of the month - 100% accuracy.
But it was the end of my career at Amazon.
They were not going to apologize and I was never moving into the office with them.
That is an old war injury.

I was literally spending 100% of my money on music - and then some...
But I had to stop and go back to college in an attempt to get a better paying job...
That I'm still working on...
But I haven't bought records in a very long time...
I've bought some mixed cd's and some albums but not like you do when mixing all the time.
Last thing I need is a make-up/hair/nails/fashion issue...
I have like 4 or 5 pairs of shoes.

Don't align your bipolar disorder with your predestined inability to be a functional part of the workforce. To acquiesce is the nature of the problem you are describing.
