do you think mdma could alter your personality? after doing it a few times i feel much like i'm in a good mood almost all the time, more mature, more empathetic, more able to understand other people's anxieties, thought patterns, etc than before. and this has lasted months.

Yes all drugs will alter your personality in some way. They will alter your personality in the same way as anything else will though, like meeting a new girl you like or accomplishing something. They are not some profound way of 'opening your mind' and bringing about some huge profound change, although i expect in some cases they have but no more than an 'ordinary' experience could have done.
MDMA definitely altered mine although i think for the worse.

Do you not think the same could have happened if you went travelling and had a great experience through that? Or something else not drug induced?

Re: --=[ Yunghed Hideout ]=--
maybe i think the empathy increase has a lot to do with it though, and i'm not sure that would have happened unless i had like a really profound converstaion with someone.
like i feel like i can read people better, respond to them in ways that make them happy, which makes everyone happy, and i don't take things as personally.
basically i feel like i understand other people a lot more, which brings with it lots of other advantages. although if i was 16 and did this, it wouldn't be the same. it was the right time for me (maturity wise) to do it.

It's not the drug that changes you, it's the state of your brain whilst you have that experience that allows you to change or not. It can take a "sober" brain a long time to change its mind or habits... certain psychedelic drugs seem (yes, experiential evidence) to put your brain into a more 'plastic' state where great changes in thinking, mood and habit can be achieved in very short amounts of time.
Most of the 'realisations' people have when on drugs could've been reached sober, but I have a feeling they might've taken a lot longer or never came. I think the same's probably true of hypnosis and a lot of 'religious' experiences. In Parson's parlance, the brain can be 'rooted' in numerous ways... clearly, you've got to be very careful about what you put through it whilst you've got CHMOD 777 set, though.
Giving the drug all the credit is unfair on the brain that had the thoughts, but taking it out of the equation altogether is just silly. However you reach it, the feeling of enlightenment is utterly beautiful. Humans of all belief systems should strive for it, even m8son.

I've got that one on my wall... when I saw the original for the first time (first time I ever saw the image at all) I just stared at it for about 20 minutes. I didn't know people who weren't on ecstasy made that face. I still find myself lost in his gaze... it's truly one of the best paintings I've ever seen. I think Zurburan's my favourite painter.
Every human life starts at the beginning of a long road to enlightenment; Dr Hoffman et al just built a few bypasses with no crash barriers on them.
