Yep, and reason why i prefer runnng to trainers is simplicity. I dont need to pay extr cash for unnecessary tools.

If you have a decent gym membership, that kind of goes out the window.

With my membership, I'm essentially training for free. The first 3 months I paid 40 euros monthly, but they exterpolate how much you pay afterwards based on how much you workout. Since I go more than 3 times per week (5, actually), I get to workout for free every month. No extra costs for tools, I can just use the cardio bike.

Hello, muscle-beachers.

I think I need to cut down on street running before I end up having a hip replacement at 35, so have been switching to a cross-trainer for cardio over the last couple of weeks... anyone have ANY IDEA how to compare the efficacy? I did 60 mins "interval training" on level 10 out of 20 yesterday, which reduced me to a ball of sweat (good sign), but it's a bit difficult to work out what sort of run that approximates...

Run on grass/a mud path through a forest. It'll save the impacts on your joints.

There aren't many forests in E14... trying to do as much as possible in my building since I've only got to psyche myself up to go downstairs. Maybe biking would be better than the crosstrainer?

Yes, I know, I live there. I don't want to run anymore. Arthritis runs in the family and I'm not pushing my luck for much longer - been running 15-20kms/week for the last 10 years and recovery is starting to get harder. I'm not trying to run a marathon (ever), this is for fitness, not bragging rights.

So does anyone know the best way of comparing two different sorts of cardio workout? Is it all about heart rate or is there more to consider?

I'm not trying to "build" or "lose" anything, just keep my heart and lungs working properly.

Never said you were, but when you're complaining about having to go downstairs to work out it sounds like you're looking for an easy way to do things.

It takes more effort to move yourself and your bike outside in the real world than it would sitting on a stationary bike. Feel free to try this though...cycle 10km on a stationary bike, time how long it takes you, then try and complete 10km outside in the real world in the same time.

I'm not complaining about going downstairs, I'm saying I'd rather use the gym downstairs rather than trek to a forest (or more likely, a park), like you suggested. When I didn't have an onsite gym I didn't have any problem with going further (used to do laps of Regents Park), but it seems silly not to take advantage of having a gym in my building seeing as it's one of the reasons we took this place!

What I'm asking is how will I know which one "works"? As I said, both reduce me to a ball of sweat after around an hour... but it's not like I feel massive gains or losses from either since I'm just maintaining a level of fitness that I've had for over a decade; I just want to know that what I'm switching to takes an equivalent amount of fitness.

I.e. How much "distance" on a cross-trainer is equivalent to the same distance running? I've heard people say you should aim for 4x distance when biking compared to running... is that roughly the same for cross training?

Guess the main point is that cycling/running on machines negates all the thousands of tiny variables that running outside gives you, it makes it a bit uniform. That is not necessarily a bad thing, it can just have different purposes.

These researchers compared oxygen consumption levels in a group of runners at a range of paces both overground and on a treadmill at a variety of inclines.

They found that a 1% incline offsets the lack of air resistance most accurately, leaving the physiological demands between overground running and 1% incline treadmill running similar.

Nice one! From the little treadmill running I've done, I definitely find it a bit easier than running on the street, but I think that might have a bit to do with how much easier it is to zone out. You're constantly watching out for people/obstacles on the street, but on the treadmill you can practically close your eyes and disappear into whatever music you're listening to.

I think maybe taking my heart-rate over a normalish outdoor run and then aiming for that sort of rate by fiddling with crosstrainer settings might be a good start. Definitely got to be kinder to my joints though... I sound like a rice krispies advert when I stand up.

I put on an amazing show today at the gym today.

When I went in for my third set of pull-ups, my left calf started cramping up so intensely that I collapsed to the floor, grunting and as my hand hit the floor, my callous tore, to make matters worse.

Completely fucked up the rest of my workout.
