Would attract some pretty pretentious with that name tbh.

Or we could just let it be...

on a serious tip; i was reading some articles, blog posts etc out of boredom, like this one
and it got me thinking if this movement/micro-scene/whatever you want to call it is the next step in the evolution of the nuum or just the product of its own mythology ? or, as a sort of extension to the product of its own mythology proposition, is it just a way to "make peace" (or maybe sense?) between all the different strains that emerged in the post dubstep landscape - like how the night slugs/fade to mind, signal life, even trap or juke are accepted* + the obvs revitalising of ideas from garage/grime/dubstep/funky etc?

*not saying they weren't accepted before, just with less debate

i don't have any beef with the idea of the nuum, but i'm not quite sure it can still be applied nowadays - although the elements are there: the punters, the media (radio, although not necessarily pirate radio tho), the centripetal approach etc.

it feels a bit forced imo; in the sense that it seems it's more of a case of "falling prey" to the nuums mythology and a need to promote it further - mostly as a backlash to house, techno, brostep (which come to think about it, was typical of previous nuum developments) - plus the sort of nationalism (don't take this out of context pls) that comes along with it ("something that's uk").

also, from 08/09 there was a lot of talk about wot do u call it moments, be it funky mutations of night slugs and hyperdub, wonky, "new takes" on house & techno (or what is more commonly referred to as 5 panel), footwork influences creeping in, now 130 etc, it's hard not to see this as a way to find a common thread and stick it under one giant vague umbrella. and imo the wot do u call it moments never really materialised into anything other than a few labels' specific sounds**.

** or is this because of the way information is shared nowadays? the fast hype build-up generates immation faster, but also means the backlash against something comes faster too.

basically what i'm trying to get at, does this have anything to do with nuum theory? or can we abandon that and say it's just a product of the internet age or w/e?
(also inb4 it was always diverse)

kode9's ra podcast is a good example of what i'm talking about

a bit tl:dr i guess but what do you guise think?

idk i just feel like people are saying oh its just ____ grime/dubstep/garage. i'll be the first to admit its not some completely new genre. i see it as just taking aspect of different things and combining it. sure there as the here and there tunes that are Heavily influenced by Grime/dubstep/garage almost to the point where they are damn near just x genre at 130. but thats sorta short minded imo

not a genre tbh,a collection of like minded ppl people doing quite different things, that happen to fit together quite nciely, a lot of different stuff is emncompassed. im sure adecent amount of thse producers woild say "im jsut making dubstep lol" (etch said that a while ago i think) ior "im just making grime m8" or "its just techno"

I reckon it's true that people are very into the idea of "the next step in the nuum!", like Beneath's mix on Hessle Audio just now had a comment that simply said "Hardcore continuum". Is this a sign that the nuum is drying up? That people need to self-awarely be like "yeah this is the next urban UK dance music". It doesn't seem very organic. But the source of this music so to speak doesn't seem like it's really London or the street or even raves. It seems like it's mostly dance music nerds, who admire the history of UK Hardcore music, passing tunes around on the internet. Of course, the tunes themselves sound sick, so if you just care about the music that's that I guess. Really, I'm an outsider to the UK so probably shouldn't be judging this stuff, but AFAIK, previous "nuum" scenes started as genuinely local, urban music. Now maybe people up and down London who don't read Fact, don't go on dubstepforum like us losers, and just get tunes from their local community are actually making music in this sound, I wouldn't know. But if, alternatively, the culture that this sound is born from is really just "the internet", how fair is it to call it a part of the "nuum"?

Just call it key sound and get over it. Most of its shit anyway. Just make it at 140 and use the pitch on the decks to slow it down.
