also was chatting to these two american guys at uni friday night and they said they didn't really get it too well, you could kinda tell by there sense of humour too

yeah american humour seems very different to u.k humour, when i was in cali i went to some comedy night and the comedian was telling such straight forward boring jokes, obviously could of been the comedian being shit but everyone else in the crowd was loving it. Also when talking to people if i used any sarcasm as a joke or anything i'd just get a blank stare not even a pity laugh. Although i think in cali the sun fucks with peoples brains everyone seems a bit weird, after a month i came back and felt like 50% retarded.

too much generalizing 2 begin with. what part of "cali" did you visit? hollywood is very different than say somewhere like fresno, bakersfield, and up north around eureka , humboldt, redding etc. a blank stare? maybe when you were talking to people, they actually did get it but moreso took it as a slight insult like "who's this fuckwit that i've never met in my life before comin up to me trying to be sarcastic". sarcasm in it's blatant form is very obvious to detect in person.
