The Official Growl Bass Thread
Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Soundcloud Attemped a remake of Scary Monsters with only Sytrus and some effects.
The modulation is all wrong but feel free to ask for details.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
Thanks, never tried the wow filter idea. Normally just put on bandreject and mess around with res and over drive a bit. I know how to eq and take out bad frequncies but sometimes i dont know when to take out a lot or a little. After it starts to be hella quiet. Im good with the after fx and chains. I normally take out the sub if im using massive for a growl but most the time fm8 has great low end.
I got the lfo tool awhile ago and got some good side chaining with it but im still lost with how to use it? Theres not many tuts and the pdf isnt really informative. It has all these list of these steps and adding different tracks and sending midi to them. Its just too much, but its a great tool if you know how to use it. I just i guess i got to mess with different mods and controls and work on more flowing automation.
Thanks AC

How does your FM matrix look and what is being modulated?

OP1 ratio is 2.5 and it is a sine.
OP2 ratio is .25 it is a triangle, it's volume is being modulated all the way by the automation envelope outside of the synth.
OP3 ratio is .25 but its wave is a bit harder to describe so here is a screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/GHPo5k4.png it's volume is modulated by the external env like;
Vol = 1 - (1-Env)/4 (only way I can think to describe it but I can take a screenshot of it too.)
OP4 is a sine at .25 ratio used for sub bass and so is OP6.
OP5 is half triangle half saw and it's ratio is 2, it's volume is being modulated by the external env.
Only the FM matrix is used not the RM matrix and it is all modulated with one external automation envelope.
It is run through an internal chorus then for external FX it is fed through a chain like this >Waveshaper(Softclipper of sorts in this case)>Compressor>Reverb>HP filter>Formant filter.
The last two(HP, formant) are used only in those high pitch parts, none of the other effects have any automation.
The volume of the growl is set to the output of a fruity peak controller which is on the drum/snare mixer channel, effectively cutting the volume of the growl when a kick or snare comes in.
One last thing, the growl has a fairly slow portamento time.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
the rising screechy synth directly after the growl in your SMNS remake is very well done. I know it seems like a pretty simple sound but could you talk about how you made it?
Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
It is relatively simple, it is basically three saws with their ratios at 2 + about .1 apart from each other, saw 1 is FMed by saw 2 about 1/4 of the way, saw 2 is FMed by saw 1 and saw 3 about 1/4 of the way as well.Today wrote:the rising screechy synth directly after the growl in your SMNS remake is very well done. All of these are then put through a lowpass at about half cutoff (sytrus wont tell me the exact cutoff but based on other FL filters probably around 1400Hz), the res is down all the way.
The FM is not necessary but it creates some nice fast dissonance.
It is fed through two waveshapers (not sure why I did this but it sounded good so yeah, they are both pretty much soft clippers at this point) then reverb>slight eq boost around 3500Hz(very slight).
All in all it is kind of a very modded reese.
Oh, another thing, all of the saws have their pitch rise to base frequency from a little ways below it over the course of a second or so.

thanks, good write up. i appreciate that.

Soundcloud
This is the growl I made using NI massive.
wavetables used were - strontium (spectrum), melofant (bend +) and flenders 1 (bend +)
filter used - Bandreject.
sine shaper in the insert section was also used.
MACROS, ENVELOPES AND LFO'S WERE USED
NO OTHER EXTERNAL PLUGINS WERE USED TO CREATE THIS GROWL!!!!
THATS ALL THE INFO YOUR GETTING, NOW IT'S UP TO YOU LOL
PEACE MIDNIGHTSOLARECLIPSE

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
herd this song awhile ago and though it was crazy how well this cheeta or tiger growl started and then the "drop" Any idea how too get an airy/wispy growl like that? Also whats this called around 0:43 its like a arpeggio and its sound like a metalic chomp chomp sound. Any clues or ideas on this?
Thanks apreciate your post!
The drop and animal growl is at 0:26
Ive worked on it for awhile for the last hour or so. I made a massive preset and sounds pretty raspy but it doesnt have that High Wa wa sound to it... Could anyone take a crack at it?
I have the massive preset, pretty good if you ask me. I rarely make presets since im a nood and just mod others i find. Theres also an ableton project and inside I basically just sidechain it to get more of an airy sound.
Thanks a lot guys!

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
While I have yet to read through this remarkably large thread, here are some tips I have learned from making sounds in le massive so far:
If you use lee Crude oscillator, set it down 3 octaves (I play my basses one octave lower, so Crude is set to -24). Set it to -/+, then put le wave table position to the far right position, then modulate le intensity with whatever you want.
I find that Performers give far more control than LFOs.
I like to add Sine Shaper, with knobs turn a bit before the middle.
Dimension Expander can work wonders. Does it also have a reverb incorporated into it?
Learn how to change the default patch (newsound) so that you can work more easily.
I find that eq'ing the high shelf makes it sound cleaner, but perhaps its my speakers.
My favourite oscillators thus far are:

I make music, and I came here to discuss it. If you want to hit me up on skype, its jimbo_tulpa_slice, and my FB is Logan Patchwirk Winterhelt.
Also, why do people always put Skrillex and deadmau5 together and think it would be awesome, it wouldn't.

Re: The Official Growl Bass Thread
could proberly also automate the eq in massive as well.

To be honest I don't know why everyone loves Modern Talking so much. In my opinion Carbon kicks the crap out of all the other wavetables in Massive. I wish we could make our own wavetables though, that would be sick

I know I have Zebra and you can make your own wavetables and waveforms there, I just wish you could do it in massive cause everything else about the synth is so goodmthrfnk wrote:There are other synths that allow custom waveformsAdd9 wrote:To be honest I don't know why everyone loves Modern Talking so much.
