The job's in Malmesbury which, while nice, has fuck all to it. I think it's about 40 miles from Bristol though. Bath is slightly closer, but I figure if I'm living in Bath then I might as well live in Bristol.

Just had a quick look at estate agents, seems fairly comparable to Letchworth rental prices. I'd still be able to live comfortably with the paycut, plus I'm not looking to buy yet anyway just to rent for a few years until I'm settled in.

The problem is whether I want to go back to the salary level I was at 3-4 years ago. This is looking like it'll be a weekend of umming and ahhhing.

Might get another job offer after today's interview, need a 3-sided coin.

The M4 commute is a tnuc from end to end, barring that bit just past Reading where there isn't a whole lot going on. Swindon, I think it's called.

A friend of mine does the opposite commute - lives in Malmesbury and works at Bristol Uni. He takes the train... Malmesbury's got a pretty decent FGW service. The car journey from the centre of Bristol to the M4 is a bitch at rush hour. At 8am, I'd guess around 45mins to get from Bedminster to the M4/M32 interchange... I'd say you're probably better off making sure you're within walking distance of Temple Meads (or one of the branch stations at Bedminster, Stapleton Rd or Lawrence Hill)

But yeah, don't move to Malmesbury unless you're getting shacked up and settling down... it's very pretty, but boring as FUCK.

Bath's lovely, but you'll find yourself travelling to and from Bristol a lot. If you're not a student, the music/social scene in Bath can be a little bit, erm, conservative.

Whatever you do, don't be tempted by Swindon.

In every IT department I've ever worked, the Unix SAs have been complete and utter pricks... it's a cliché, but honestly, the have absolutely no social awareness.

One of them here sits one or two days a week strumming an out of tune guitar (?!?), they've got alerting on one of their servers which causes the same sound as the fire alarm to go off every hour or so and now one of them has started passing round one of those "Shock Roulette" games which plays the most ridiculously LOUD music... they must have played it 15 times in the last 20 minutes. I just spent 10 minutes apologising to people on the phone because it sounds like I'm in a fucking Hanna-Barbera cartoon.

I'm going to go over and kill one and hope the others get the message.

Of course... though the beardy-weirdy look seems to be a little last generation; I swear all the young ones think they're 4Chan hipsters or something. I really want to see if they're like this outside the office, but I have a feeling they might all sleep in the Datacentre... I've only ever seen one of them at an afterwork drinks and he did the old trick of showing a woman your cheek to kiss, then turning 90 degrees to make her land on the lips... SMOOTH.
