At uni i had a part time job in a supermarket - worked with a guy who immigrated from Sierra Leon when he was about 18 because people killed everyone in his village including his entire family whilst he hid (was 11 or something at the time), anxiety is just part of a life like that, when us westerners get it for stupid reasons we question it more/ give it names/ use it as an excuse/ etc. I think a lot of people claim to have anxiety disorders when they don't... its just our wiring.Genevieve wrote:It's only now become accepted as something real and more documented. There was a huge stigma against mental illness for a long time, probably dually so for something like anxiety.Laszlo wrote:Really?Lye Form wrote:Anxiety is normal, I think more people than not have had anxiety attacks at some point and is just the way we have evolved.
Seems to me to be a particularly western world, late 20th/early 21st century phenomenon to me.
I'm not 'sure' of anything, just to the best of my understanding of anxiety, its a survival instinct for releasing adrenalin in life or death situations, i.e running away from big hairy things with sharp teeth or other humans. Social anxiety is the fear of doing something wrong which can result in being killed by that person/someone in their tribe. Anxiety has been around as long as adrenalin has.. if that makes sense.Laszlo wrote:But 'the way we have evolved'?!

My post was a bit acerbic because your online "persona" winds me the fuck up (not many people manage that without ever talking about politics - props) but the sentiment's real enough - the only time I've ever reliably felt like you described is when I was out of work on full pay for 3 months a few years ago. Spent most of it trying to convince myself I was living the dream, but I didn't realise how low I'd got until I finally had to go into work again.Agent 47 wrote:you don't know anything about me... you occasionally see something dumb i write while fucked upmagma wrote:You don't have any direction in your life and your brain is throwing a fit.
Do something constructive with your life. You'll feel better once your psyche is happy that you're not wasting your one chance at human existence on being a cock as publicly as possible.

Depends entirely what you get out of it.Mason wrote:lol are you having a go at 'being a cock as publicly as possible'?magma wrote:You don't have any direction in your life and your brain is throwing a fit.

because its a trigger - Our lifestyles now don't match the way we have evolved. we malfunction/ brains over-react to things, a huge rush of adrenalin (panic attack) can happen when its not a life/death situation or in any risk at all. Drink and drugs can add to itLaszlo wrote:^Yeah, but, as per your example, how does an anxiety attack whilst jammin on a SE Asian beach help us it terms of not getting killed?

If you're paying for a great life by letting the world think you're a shiftless dick (eg. Karl Pilkington) then I imagine it's easy to become pretty content with garnering low levels of respect. If you promote yourself as a dick yet you're left with no cash and the only stories you've got to tell are about getting kicked out of student accommodation, stealing from all-you-can-eat restaurants and missing lectures then you're probably not doing it right... and your brain will almost certainly freak out on you eventually.
Ah I see.Lye Form wrote:because its a trigger - Our lifestyles now don't match the way we have evolved. we malfunction/ brains over-react to things, a huge rush of adrenalin (panic attack) can happen when its not a life/death situation or in any risk at all. I wasn't really dwelling on any of that stuff right now (I think I covered it all pretty effectively the other week) - you've justified them before too; I guess we just have a different sense of humour - I was really just explaining the lack of tact in my post - it's not that you offend me - as I said, you don't even discuss topics of any relevance - I'm not sure you're capable of offending me - you just wind me up with your whole "HAhahaha I'm so pathetic, it's SO FUNNY M8S!!" shtick, especially when it's followed with posts like this where you ask for help and then fight against the advice offered. It's not very funny at all, is it? It's only pathetic, isn't it? It seems to imply a lack of belief in the self - as if you feel like earning respect from your peers for anything but clowning around is above your borne station as the class fool - which is why I'm not at all surprised to see you make a post about anxiety.but yeah, chill out. i mean sorry i offend you so much in person i usually get along with people real well. my internet skills must be poor
I think more people than not will get a panic attack at some point, as its just a very high adrenal release. When i told my doctor i had one he wanted to put me on anti-anxiety medication, which i refused as i am never anxious in day to day life, i know this has happened to quite a few people who didn't think they needed any. :-/Laszlo wrote:Ah I see.Lye Form wrote:because its a trigger - Our lifestyles now don't match the way we have evolved. we malfunction/ brains over-react to things, a huge rush of adrenalin (panic attack) can happen when its not a life/death situation or in any risk at all. But you reckon this affects more people than not? Would you say (even at a guess) that this is true on a worldwide scale?
This isn't an attack, i'm just interested.
