Stood on the stage of the Royal Institute last night and quoted Faraday to an empty room, my mate did a great little speech on Quantum Tunnelling to a much less empty room; we met Dr. Alice Roberts ( ) and saw Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock's left boob (shame those two weren't the other way round).

So it went well then?

Yeah, she didn't win but was very well received... and we made her some good contacts in the bar afterwards so hopefully she'll be doing some more. Next time she's speaking I'll bring people along, but she was prrrrrroper nervous last night!

Nooo, this was the second time... and the last time was to the back room of a little museum in Bristol, so this was a bit more daunting... all the other speakers had been through public speaking rounds previously to qualify, but Lia was the only person to be picked from a video submission, so she'd only tested out her schtick with me and a webcam.

She didn't... it turned out she was the most eligable bachelorette there. I thought I was doing really well with this write-home-to-mother fine epidemiologist right up until her boyfriend said hello and asked me what I was "working on".

the number of times that's happened recently in my ex-office to two rather desperate guys has been staggering. I just wait for the drop every time they've tried it on with a new starter of the female persuasion. The looks on their faces is always priceless when the women eventually casually mention their boyfriends/husbands after a 10 minute conversation.
