Hey Guys,
I'm John. I run subsekt (The place with Mattias' samples) with a couple of friends & this is the first time that I've seen our site linked anywhere - so thats really cool
We've a wicked Techno orientated production forum there - amongst other stuff. I hope the mods dont mind me mentioning that?
I'm a regular lurker here, but seem to have missed this thread until tonight. One thing that might help in terms of nailing that kick / reverb / sub rumble thing, is a couple of the reverb presets in Live. I think they are called Kick Verb 1 and 2. They are in
Reverb / Special as far as I know. I've read that Dettmann uses Ableton, so I'm sure he's had a look in there haha. Try them on a send. 100% wet. You might need some compression after it - Maybe light sidechaining. I usually try to get the decay of it right & just do some light SC for peace of mind.. But Mattias' technique is wicked. In fairness, you can actually do so much with just a single kick / reverb / bit of distortion & EQ. If you keep the decay short enough, you can get a nice groove going with the distortion.
When I'm sticking a delay on the kick & reverb: For quickness, I'll probably get a simple delay or filter delay on a single kick (or simple pattern) and get a preset that sounds good. Then I'll mono it, which stops it from bouncing L/R & makes it usable - Big change. Then Reverb etc.. etc..
Theres loads of ways of doing that low reverb kick. You can resample a 1 kick over
2 bars. Have the reverb as an insert - 50% Wet. Predelay to the max. Decay - 5 seconds. Resample that. Your audio file should have a Dry Kick at the start & the wet one at the end. Crop it. Throw it into simpler. EQ & compress. Mono.
Another Reverb setting that is used by Brendon Moeller / Echologist - is the Flangeverb - which is in Live again, in the Audio Effect Racks section /
Reverb. He uses it on a send - 100% wet. He sends a bit of everything to it.

Our production section is called "The Hole". Theres a number of "subsekt sound design" threads in there. One covers Kicks. Might be useful to see some of the approaches?

I dont know what you Guys have seen on here in relation to "our genre's" tutorials on You Tube?
Check this Guys channel - Tony / Atabey -

Hes a nice fella. His vids are a bit long, but he has lots of good ones about using delays / chords / noise. It's more Dub Techno in style - but theres a lot of that vibe coming into Techno with Sandwell District / Shifted etc..

This might be of interest too - A friend has written a short article on D16's plugins & he talks a little about how he uses them in his tracks. He gets a nice sound from them & explains why with a couple of audio examples. His bassline is deadly.

One of the things that we've come to the conclusion on is that you need to use lots of different distortion / tube / bitcrusher / amp sims / tape plugs / to warm & fuck stuff up. Use them individually.. and use different plugins In order to get grit and avoid each element "sounding similar". Its no good running stuff thru' one Saturator or Overdrive.
Hope you don't mind me letting you know about all of this. I dont ever feel that I have anything to contribute here as I dont make DS - so it would be wicked if you found some of this helpful
Cheers,
J
