Why do you fart in a bag, put a scarf round it to hold in the gas, call it Davo and then go on holiday with it in your frankly rather shit caravan?
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe this particularly pertinient question was ever answered.
I need to know!

Professor Nonce has let this class down so I will redirect this question to answer why you can walk across custard:
The application of force - for example by stabbing the surface with a finger, or rapidly inverting the container holding the custard - leads to the custard behaving like a solid rather than a liquid. This is the "shear thickening" property of this non-Newtonian fluid. More gentle treatment, such as slowly inserting a spoon, will leave the custard in its liquid state. Trying to jerk the spoon back out again, however, will trigger the return of the temporary solid state. A person moving quickly and applying sufficient force with his feet can literally walk across custard, but if he stops he will sink into the liquid custard and it will solidify again when he moves to escape, meaning that it is very hard to escape from.
