I've had my eye on the Schiit Magnus and Modi. Discrete amp and 24/96k DAC for $200 for the pair? Mmm mmm, I just... might.... hafta...
I kinda want a Benchmark DAC1 or Grace M903 but I can't see myself spending that kind of loot. And if I do, I'd rather it go towards some ADC and analog ins too, not just a DAC.
I realized the other day though, that apart from the slutty gear that I lust after and possibly the Schiit boxes, there's nothing else really on my gear radar. I need a scissor stand for my MPK but that's about it. Now I pretty much have no choice but to stop procrastinating and get down to it.
Although I wouldn't mind a bass... And possibly some more headphones. And a Zoom H4N with a shotgun and contact mic. Hydrophonic mics look really cool too.
Fuck.
The Benchmark DAC 1 is a beauty. I upgraded straight form a focusrite saffire LE to it (still have the saffire just don't use it for monitoring) and the difference was soo much more than I thought it was going to be. Everything just seemed 'smoother' it was one of those go back and listen to all my favourite songs to see what they sounded like through it type things
I haven't really checked into the JDS Labs Cmoy. There's some other good options for cheap as well. The Modi/Magni duo just came highly recommended. Still have some more research to do.

My studio’s currently thirteen floors up looking East out over Montreal’s Plateau and the Olympic Stadium. I moved here over a year ago knowing it’d be an inspiring vibe for the home studio and thus far it’s been a fantastic experience.
I’ve had a few studios that were rather dark and closed off from the outside world, so it’s rather different to be surrounded by so much light and sky for a change. It’s actually quite fun to make techno when there’s a storm right in front of the window or when the sun starts to rise at the end of an all-night session. At night, the city lights and studio LEDs play off each other pretty synchronously and the whole setup feels like the cockpit of an airplane or spaceship which I really enjoy too. Since making the move, my productivity’s been great and I think a lot of it just has to do with how much I like the feeling and mood of the place.
^That's fantastic. My studio spaces are always rather cramped and closed off. The best I ever had was the first, I said fuck it one night and moved my shitty kitchen table over next to the door were it would collect mail and dust and set up my studio in the dinning area next to the kitchen, could watch the weather and the parking lot from there through the glass doors to the balcony. Over that winter break I'd ordered FL Studio boxed version as I got a deal on it, but they ran out of 7 and were waiting for 8 to ship mine. I sat there getting blunted like ery day trying to make tunes with the demo, which wouldn't let you save. Super blazed 8 hour sessions. I made my first "album" ever that way in a month. I think I still have those tunes somewhere.
As for gear lust really missing having something not connected to the computer to jam on. Probably gonna keep Maschine and use that for drums. Can't justify buying something for drums when I have Maschine and an 8 out interface. Got my mixer, the KP3, Mopho and Monotron Delay as well as something bits of hardware. Thinking of either getting an EMX, Volca Keys or a Korg MS2000R. I think the EMX would be the most fun and versatile, but the Keys fits the budget nicely.

In addition to other bits and pieces. The Zoom is going to act as a hardware bouncedown/recorder, the SP-303 I'm going to be running Cool Edit through it (reckon the GF is shortly going to get herself a Macbook, so will grab her old laptop to strip out and run stuff through), and the EFX-500 for a bit of colour and real time effects noodling.
Did have a crazy idea the other day of using the EFX in conjunction with my BC-8 and see how far I can go with just those two in terms of sound design/manipulation.

Oh damn. I remember you talking about the SP 303. How are you liking it? An acquaintance of mine loves the SP series, swears by some of the FX and the sound of the machines for doing his LA Beat Scene/Instrumental Hip Hop stuff. He said its a breeze to set up Maschine to sequence the sounds on an SP 303, so I've been wanting one.
That is sounding like a pretty awesome little set up! You are still using a Monotron as well aren't you?

Yeah, need to have a proper dig into it, this was the video that really swung it for me though;

In addition to the above, got the electribe, darkstar, Monotron delay, Kaossillator, BC-8 plus a couple of Alessis rack units I'm not really sure how I'm going to work into the end 'live' product as they're more pure studio work stuff (3630 compressor, midiverb).
The issue now is that I've built up so many small bits that I haven't quite figured out how it's all going to link together with the new bits
Oh damn man. That is a little setup. Very nice though! I'm not assuming that you don't spend quality time with your gear, but figuring out a setup that will function pretty well together and get a project completed.
I think I've seen that Four Tet before, it is pretty bad ass if I remember.
I don't know how much you typically spend on a piece of gear, but personally I think an analog rack filter would be a nice touch to that setup. There are used Electrix Filter Factories on eBay all the time. I just saw one for like 170 USD? Really fun piece of live gear, lots of big 90's acts used them from what I've read.
What are you going to use to sum the signal? Do you have a mixer? I think I remember talking shop about that with you at one point.
I'm hoping to add one of those analog Akai rack filters or a Vermona Lancet to my setup.

FilterQueen would be the one if I saw one going cheap.

No mixer at the moment, so that's the next thing on the list. Did spot a cheap(ish) desk a while back but it would've meant a space issue if I'd picked it up, so put it on hold for a few months.
There are a lot of pretty awesome small mixers these days. It might be worth looking into the smaller/entry level Allen and Heath mixers that come with FX. But I'm guessing you'll want some send/return options as well.
Buying a mixer is still the most difficult piece of gear to research for me...every time I get one I think I've bought something that will have my bases covered. Three mixers in, still fail, lol...I always want more options.

What is the word on the OP-1? Anyone had any experience with it yet?.
Comes across as hipster a fuck, plus will always have the Swedish House Mafia association with it.
That being said, they have just released a new set for it which allows for more modifications with the control panel iirc.
I only very vaguely know who swedish house mafia, so I'm good there. It Does seem hipstery though. But then again I'm bald, ugly, shred on my mountain bike, and can field strip an ar-15 blindfolded, little chance of ever being confused for a hipster (though I'm 100 percent hipster at heart).
I just don't know anyone who has one, or has even used one...
Really, it is the tape in there... I'm thinking this would be a great companion to the 404, just bouncing back and forth...
