-How do I do a drum 'flam' ? Reason's drum machine has a flam button that let's your hit do a tight fast little roll. Is there a certain way to do this in Ableton, or do I just make the grid small (like 1/64) and write in the flam/roll manually ?

-I was reading that you should mix your song/tracks to about -6db or so. I seriously don't know how to view exactly what db im at on each track (...or should i only be looking at the master.) I understand I can look at the volume meter, but that's not accurate. Should I have a spectrum analyser on everything ? Should I have a compressor or limiter at the end of everything to keep in down to the right level ?
yeah as stated before do it manually, might be a bit longer but ultimately having the control over it can mean you can make it sound better and more you!

you don't need to worry bout having each individual channel level hit -6db, you only need to worry about that on the master. what you should watch though is the little meters between each plugin, keep all of those in the green for each individual channel. you definitely shouldn't need a compressor or limiter to make sure things are at the right level you should just make sure they are, once you get into that mode you'll find that you automatically get things hitting to that level without even realising.

HOWEVER some people do mix their tracks into a compressor from the get-go, personally it's not something i ever found worked for me but there are plenty of people whom it does work for, but that is about a creative decision and how they feel it affects their sound rather than having it on there to make sure things are at the right level.

Composing with your master buss completely FXed up is probably good for people who are already established in the business, have found what kind of sound works for them, and don't want to change it. If you like experimenting and letting your own mood affect how your master buss sounds, then don't put anything on it.

This doesn't necessarily relate to Ableton alone but that's what i'm using atm. It seems like whenever i render a track it comes out with the levels a bit off. I'm not serious enough w/ my tunes that I would want to send it to an ME but im curious why the tune always comes out so much softer, referring to volume, once it's exported.

Average 320 w/ 24 bit depth. Wav format.

320 and wav are two completely different things mate.

320 = mp3, not wav. But i don't think the levels are off. Rendering is basically just recording the master channel..

Sorry, i thought 320 was referring to the sample rate, which is being exported at 32000. Thanks for the correction though.

Export at 44.1kHz minimum whenever possible (which should be all the time).

Ableton Audio Clips - Volume "Skipping"

Hey all,

Been having a weird problem lately. Here's what happens... I'll preview a sample (in this case some typical Vengeance up sweep [actually this problem is almost exclusive to riser clips]) by clicking it in the browser. The preview sounds just dandy. I'll drop the sample into its rightful spot in the track. The track contains zero effect, sends, nothing - just a fresh audio track. Upon playback, the volume will actually work its way up in rhythmic "jumps". Thus, kind of defeating the whole purpose of a nice smooth riser. Now don't picture the volume in a rigid "staircase" fashion - there is still an overall sweep of gradual..ness... but there's still a subtle but maddening skip in volume.

Anyone ever experienced this? It's super weird and although pretty minor, it's still such a nagging little.. fuck.

Thanks for any help

set clip settings to "compex pro," right-click the 0 point on the sample, and "warp [your tracks bpm] from here."

done.

Ohhhh my god it was the warp... Amazing how eventually the little shit gets by you. Well, that's embarrassing. Thanks man.

hmmm, what is the point of the higher bitrates?

ive read that working at 48 will be a higher quality sound coming out of your plugins, like they will effect the sound more clearly. so ive been exporting at 48 and just converting to 320 when necessary. is this bad? should i always stay at 44?

go into your preferences and turn off auto warping.

Not a lot of point if it's your final mixdown you're exporting, but sometimes it could be useful on sounds you are going to work a lot on.

higher samplerates (not bitrates) such as 48 or 96 kHz give a better representation of higher frequencies. 44.1 is chosen so no aliasing can happen when the frequencies are cut down to human hearing only (2x human range).

Can the samplerate that's associated w/ audio specs be related to the data transfer rate in a computer? I understand computer specs more than audio, and since both a computer's system clock and the audio sample rate are both measured in Hz (although the clock generator is measured at much higher speeds), would they share any similair traits?

Ableton Suite (Education)?

Was about to buy Suite a minute ago, and then noticed something about "40% off if you are a student" on their homepage.

Well, I am a student, will be attending university next year, not for music production or anything, but I will be a student of some sort.

It loaded into my cart as "Ableton Suite 8 (education)" looks like it will be identical, comes with the upgrade also. Is there ANY catch? It hasn't asked for any sort of confirmation that I'm a student or anything.

I think i'm gonna go ahead, juts don't want to be in some fucked situation where I buy it, then it wants proof that i'm in like some music production school and I'm screwed.

Anyone tried this before?

i don't know about the student discount...but version 9 should be out this month so unless it includes a free upgrade you may want to hold off for a couple weeks.

@sinergy ...reread your post and see it includes the upgrade. the following link should answer your questions. you do not have to be a music major. the discount is available to all students.
