Deadly Habit's right, you can replace the tubes, and i did this on my emx. it sounds thick as fuck now that ive done it, and the tubes are like $20 a piece. theres a few tutorials for the process on the korg electribe forums, so if you've got one, check it out. It really makes them sound a LOT better. more warm, and less distorted. more "punch" too.
I'd say the biggest issue i have with it is the sequencer, since it's ALWAYS quantized, but you like anything, the more limited you are, the more opportunities for creativity you have.
if i had to choose now, id pick up an emx.
Right now I just have the EMX, and have been tempted to get the ESX also, but I think the whole hassle of copying over samples to a card means it would be easier to use the computer as a sampler...
Still, for doing gigs these things kick ass... modeselektor use the EMX I think...
Also, if you want to beat the 16th bar quantize thing, pattern to 32 beats instead.
Finally, do you have a link to changing the tubes or even an electribe forum? I've tried google but I only found things like youtube vids of poeple jamming away on the emx/esx...
I'm tempted to give the tube swap a go now, after what you said... I wasn't really sure if it would make much difference.

Cheers man, that's really really easy to do, I'm going to order some of those groove tubes...
Where did you get yours from? I've seen them for around £20 each at Digital Village, is there anywhere else in the UK preferably...

got mine from sweetwater.com. In that link, or at least in that forum, theres a link somewhere to get tubes from somewhere in europe for cheaper, and they'll even check them to make sure they're a "matched pair" for a little bit more. i hear it's worth it to do that, even though i couldn't be bothered.
the trick is to tune them with the little knobs on the pcb near the tube plugs. if the tubes are majorly different in volume, switch em out. that worked for me. then take them into logic or something with a VU meter and double check that their at the same level with a sine wave and your golden.

Ahh, i just noticed you're on the other side of the pond!
I'll hunt for that link, I may give digital village a ring, ask they they supply matched tubes, they have a shop less than 10 miles from me, and I wouldn't have to wait for them to be delivered as it can take 2 weeks sometimes for things to get to the UK from Europe, and I'm an impatient ****er!
Even if I get a non-matched pair, I should be able to match the levels ok, I have an oscilloscope which should more accurate than a VU meter...

an oscilloscope? then you're probably better off than me! let us all know what you think of the difference. im sure others would be interested as well.
i've often heard, that if your looking to sell your EMX, switch out the tubes before you give up on it. a lot of people keep em after that.
