i'm working on something now that just didn't sound right at 140, slowed it down to 137 and now the elements have space to breathe and it sounds miles better

Anything above 135 is pushing it hard for the big mixes. House and garage are seriously pushed if the dubstep is above 135-138

Plenty of stuff that sounds like dub at 125 has existed for ages. Even people like Massive attack, Groove armada, leftfield etc have done dubby songs at this tempo.theartfulbadger wrote:Does 'dubstep' really need to have 140bpm?

Check Harmonic 313 - dirtbox for a heavy glitched out bass thing at this tempo. Think he was going for more of a halfstep dancehall kinda beat but it definitely could be interpreted as some really slow dubstep if you like.

I love dropping to something this tempo in dubstep sets as people are either trashing at 140 or womping at 70 and the 125 middleground is a rather fun switch up I feel.

Thanks for all the responses. Any more recommendations for slower tunes are much appreciated.
I'm no DJ but I assume tracks with wildly different bpms are impossible to mix.

You can beatmix with a tightly picked selection and some hard work at the pitch
and there is a lot of other ways to mix too.
Back in both the 80's and the 90's lots of djs did this.
and now with all the software available it shouldn't be any problem at all
Anyone remember oldschool electro ? Lots of that is in 120-130 bpm
