This is actually the exact reason I got CDJs instead of a Serato/Traktor kit.

I already spend way too much time in front of a screen producing.

kenjen wrote:Hey guys, didn't want to start a new thread about this so I figured I would just post here. I got my DJ setup around 4 months ago I have two technic 1200s m3ds. A behringer DJX 750 and serato. I have mainly just been downloading tunes and playing them at parties usually in my house. I have a mix of dubstep, house, dnb, and a lot of metal/rock (i'm a big metal head as well) (also, i'm not proud of ripping music off the internet which is why I am asking this, so keep the bashing to a minimum please) I have had a fascination with vinyl as long as I can remember, and I was thinking about selling my serato SL3 which I should be able to get around 700-800 dollars for, and spending that on a PA and vinyls. Does it sound logical to regress like that? Or should I just start buying MP3s online. I dont fell like my skills are that sharp just because I jumped to using serato, and it's made me kinda lazy. Sorry for the scattered text, my mind is racing atm. What do you guys think? :u:
Don't sell Serato, buy mp3's on Beatport. Later when you have more cash buy some wax.
Serato is a really great addition to any set up and it would be a shame to get rid of it.

I think any mixing program for a computer only set up is a good start. I myself started with Traktor many years ago (Jesus, like 8 years ago?) and that enabled me to learn the absolute basics of mixing. As I got more money, I bought more gear and records, shut myself in, and learned how to do everything.

One huge disadvantage of going out and buying a DJ set up straight away is you don't know whether or not you'll like it. Also, if you only have 30 or 40 records starting out, good luck getting booked anywhere. The first 50 records I started out with were mostly bullshit, I probably still play 2 of them. Starting out on a computer program at the very least allows you to start out with music you like rather than whatever 90s 12" singles you can get for cheap.

Just my 2 cents.

PS. The new generation doesn't even know the struggle of trying to DJ before programs like Traktor. DJing with tape decks, mismatched CD players for cars; I did all of that shit before I had decks.

if u must buy 2 cdj 400's and a cheapy mixer

collect some mp3s

you'll be able to gather more tunes that way then later definatley buy a technic and some vinyl.

both ways are expensive. cdjs youll need alot of money up front
2 technics and a mixer can be like a grand plus vinyl...

i think pada was refering to staring at a screen mixing using the likes of virtual dj and ableton that sort of stuff, you barely stare at the screen using serato.

like i said before SERATO FTW!!!!! :D
