it really depends on what you want to do. if i had the money, id probably get some sort of mpc...
yeah mate classic synth and gives a powerfull sound with character - takes a while to get to know it insideout - like a fine woman but if your on a budget id start on soft synths to see what suits ya.

i hate to say it but its inevitable that the softs will take over sooner or later caus of convenience and the fact that they are sounding better and better

Upgrading your monitoring is always a good idea. Monitors first, acoustic treatment, d/a conversion / interface.

Boring stuff maybe, but important.
