yeah
IRC can get pretty shitty if it's an open room
the password / invite only is a good look
this can be a cool place for real time help / idea sharing if everyone gets involved
can be a lame place if the wrong people get in LOL

just make an irc channel and give +op to the regulars.

Hmm efnet is completely open, but other networks such as dalnet/freenode etc allow you to set up channel owners/co-owners with passwords etc and also allow registration of nicknames and channels, to keep the spam and trolling down to a minimum. If going IRC route, efnet isn't really secure these days. If you get a bot or 2 though then it's no problem.
