I used to worry about writing minimal stuff because I didnt want it to sound boring. But then I came to realise that a whole track filled to the tits with wobbles and the like actually sounds a hell of a lot more tedious a hell of a lot sooner than a well contructed, space filled, roller.
Minimal ambient vibes in a track just seem so much more sincere than linear dancefloor tracks. They tend to leave me quite cold these days .Dunno if its just me getting old.......

I am the same with dubstep as I was when I first got into drum and bass all those years ago... The grit drew me in, but once I was here it was the space and ambience that hooked me.
I have always had a really broad musical taste, from FSOL to Orbital to Nirvana to Aphex twin, early hardcore and jungle, drum and bass, downtempo, techno and everything in between. Dubstep is a beautiful thing because it can encompass pretty much any influence you care to mention. Production-wise I am more at a stage where I am playing around until something good comes out then building on it, rather than having an idea and being able to produce it (I am learning all the time though). I am finding that I naturally veer towards the more spacious, atmospheric sound.
Saying that, lets face it, sometimes there is nothing better than brocking out to some utter filth or teh wobbles

I was thinking a bit about the original question a bit more...
wayoftheworld wrote:something i miss about older dubstep was all the space in a track. nowadays it seems like most producers are more interested in showing off their production wizardry and filling up all the space they can with little sounds. which is all well if you're that good of a producer, but damn its borderline wankery at times, like some hair metal dude shredding a guitar solo for 5 minutes.
nothing wrong with it if thats yr thing, but i could really use some more space, vibes, and dub.
Maybe style/sound that is seemingly so popular is because the bedroom producers and djs still have not reached the age to check out what Dubstep actually feels like in a club... I could be way off here but would it be safe to assume that most of the folk making this style/sound are a; American and b; under 21 so they can't hit US clubs yet?
This seems to be the way in the UK too but less so on the production front, may have influence on digital sales and in turn is starting to affect what the more established producers are writing.
Hope that made sense

filth is overrated, and NOT the key to heaviness.

I tend to try and make a bit of both tbh, loving both the heavy wobbler's and I like the ambient side of dubstep. My Heavy Rain track (on my myspace and soundcloud) is the one ambient track I've done so far. Wish I could make tracks which were as close to Burial's style as possible.

I think everyone just needs to accept the fact that Dubstep has grown and there are starting to be different forms of it. Saying that ONLY the Spacey stuff is good or ONLY the filled up stuff is good is very narrow minded. Some songs of both types are good but not all songs of one type is good.

X2 I don't think anyone is saying anything like that. I'd be a hypocrite if I was, I can rinse it out with teh bros. Made a few filth tunes in my day as well. The market for that stuff is oversaturated now (no pun intended) tho. Just wish more people would make their own music. Maybe everyone wants to sounds liek clones of each other? If so, fair play then

:script: loads of copycat engineer big sound guys and make generic samey tunes, hell i'm guilty too. my experimental or reg production side never makes any waves or attention to give me hype or any besides a few followers.
rmx on fabirc and original is only i've ever seen anything on and that was an experimental throwback tune

dubstep is music... which means it can be and express anything you want it to... if there's a lot of grit and grime and agressiveness in your life, it'll come out in the music...
myself, i like a balance. even on a hyped up wobbler, i like to start it off with just some laidback drums and subbass, then subtly ascend to full blown chaos.. then bring it back down.
something everyone needs to understand is... there are plenty of true artists, and there are plenty of rip-off wannabes who seem to ruin it for everyone. just like in rock. and rap, and classical, and jazz.... you just have to keep your attention on the artists YOU like, and you will be happy.

i dont really think its an issue of "loud/heavy/wobble" versus "minimal/tech/deep" or anything like that, its just kind've a bummer that the majority of producers out there at the moment seem to be more interested in showing off and being really flashy rather than embracing what made dubstep so awesome in the first place (besides the bass): space, pace, and dubby roots.

I'm surprised that so many others feel the same way I do about the direction dubstep is taking. I've also felt a need to go back to that deeper, more percussive spacious style as well, so I came up with this number.
