watch the documentaries touring chernobyl then play this game.
definitely a "more than the some of its parts" type game. individual elements may be "meh" but there is a vibe in the game that keeps you coming back.
also watching the original Andrei Tarkovsky movie helps too..

games with sick ambience are just the max. I'm hoping some company would make a game of a world like the one in avatar. Come up with a good story and gameplay. Get a few big composers making the sickest soundtextures ever. Not just a game but a fucking masterwork of art.

honestly I just found the over the top gun spray and powerful enemies and endless dieing and respawning so frustrating I played about 8 hours of the game then gave up.

Silent Hill 1 + 2
Half Life 2
These are the only games that have managed to scare the shit out of me. Ravenholm was straight out of a fucking nightmare.
Also, Dead Space was ruined by using the same string stabs everytime an enemy jumped out, not enough lairy buildups.

I dunno, never experienced anything like that, but it did take a while to get into. It's one of the best games i've ever played, so in depth and open. Make sure to use the artifacts you find as they are very important to your survival. Try it again sometime... I recommend getting the Oblivion Lost mod which makes it more like it originally was, including drivable vehicles. Makes the damage more realistic as well so you can get one shot one kill headshots: http://forums.filefront.com/s-t-l-k-e-r ... halos.html
Also, the new one Call of Pripyat comes out sometime in February.
Sorry went a bit off topic.
^ S.T.A.L.K.E.R gets a vote from me, and Dead Space as well. Dead Space is pretty amazing, and the sound is a HUGE part of the game.
Dead Space + Mushrooms =

In my eyes, the art design completely overshadows any technical shortcomings. Anyway, there are no robots and the diversity and complexity of the flora and fauna makes Avatar look like a petting zoo.
