For low price-monitors it's all about the Event, I've seen those speakers in a lot of high end studios around the place, places that could afford to spend a lot more money.

Tannoy Reveals are supposed to be good if you can find them ( e-bay? )

Also for those of you looking for a (much) more expensive solution should check the K+H 0300d's ( for nearfields )

For main monitors I would recommend the old Tannoy DMT12's , nothing better in my opinion at the current ( used ) prices, you'll need an amp though, and I would say the Bryston 4B is a perfect match

These "high-end" studios usually have 3-5 different pairs of near/mid-field's setup for referencing.

yeah, I've had some tapcos for the last month or two.. very impressed so far, although my room needs some significant bass trapping setup!

I've got the Dynaudio BM's which I've owned for about 3 1/2 years now, and really like them. I've used the larger active BM15's before and they kick ass.

If and when I upgrade I think I'd go for the Mackie 824's (due to their excellent bass representation, down to 40hz) or a pair of Event Precision 8 Active's (35 Hz-20 kHz response - perfect for getting those low frequencies right first time).

Much better to have good low end rep on active monitors alone rather than being distracted by a sub woofer's enhancement.

If you can find a pair i'd recommend KRK Rokit RP-8's. They are now like unicorn turds but for under £400 they are the absolute dogs bollox. hunt for em geez, well worth it.
