managed to kill my mp3 player so need to nick the gf's one that she never uses  but don't wanna deal with sonicstage.
im not 100% sure but i think that the older players wont do this, its called MTP and is pretty standard on newer players, but it doesnt work with every OS. If it were to work you would just plug it in via usb and you would see it listed with your other drives. I dont think you can make a a non mtp player into an mtp player.

Still havnt decided on my player.. no ipods for me. here is my desire for a player:

long battery life
excellent sound quality
external speaker and voice recording (for work)
as large a graphic equalizer as i can get (seem to be all 5 band :( )
8b storage
do not care about bells n whistles or video or any of that other 'ish.
under 100 euro/pound/dollar would be best.

thanks for the replies so far , anyone else?

Man at christmas time when I came home for the holidays, I dropped my ipod nano in the snow in my driveway but thought I left it in my buddy's car. So I waited until the beginning of the semester to check his car, obviously wasn't there, eventually got an iPod Touch. Summer rolls around, snow melts, my parents find it in their driveway, where it's most likely been run over countless times. So just the other day I picked it up and plugged it into my computer, low and behold the apple logo pops up. Just needed a charge! The thing was under snow all winter and the top piece around the hold button was loose before I dropped it so I don't know how it didn't get fucked.

Now I've got a nice little backup ipod and I can actually use it as a flash drive (fuckin touches won't do it)

but when i try to put wavs onto it, is drastically reduces the file size - indeed it appears to be converting them to 128kbps mp3s. bullshit.

fuck apple, man.
There's a setting in iTunes on the iPod page that's something like "Convert larger files to 128 kbps mp3s." Check that shit.

I think I read on Headwize or somewhere about modding the ipod so that the signal from the D/A goes straight to the jack instead of being routed through other circuits first. Apparently they have really nice converters but they sound like shit because the signal path isn't clean.

I have had a couple of the little USB stick looking deals. Both where 2 gigs. They are self sufficient. No attachments except for the headphones. Battery life is excellent. They are cheap etc. Problem is both of them ended up going through the washer lol. They still worked after that except the battery is done so they are basically USB sticks now. Now I have the iPhone 4 and I think it's awesome. MAkes sense to me to just use the phone so you don't need an extra device in you pocket. Most phones do it these days so thAts the way to go imo

If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you're going to see some serious shit.

I considered using my phone, which is decent, but i only have a 1gb of storage and the i have to use a connection between my headphones and the phone itself which makes the chord like 2m (6ft) long, whcih is very annoying, the other thing is i tend to drop my player a lot cuz ido things with it, so im worried that if i used my phone id just end up fucking it up...definitely the cheapest option for me at this point

I've dropped my ipod so many times in the gym, shit goes skittering off of chuncks of steel. Every time I pick it up, I'm like this screen is going to be blank. Every time it still works. Think I should get one of those gay ass arm straps that holds the fucker in place, and then when you want to rate a song or skip songs, you can look like the predator.

I uninstalled itunes from my life with that same mentality. Just reinstalled for a particular purpose, and you know what? It's not bugging me so much. Winamp bugged me way more dood. That is no joke. Foobar, wasn't even enough there to actually bug me. This version of itunes is not real intrusive, isn't always trying to sell me shit. I don't know, I guess I played the field a bit, and itunes stopped seeming so bad.
