Trying singing the things you're thinking of and record yourself. Then go back and transpose them onto a synth.

Not quite true. If you ignore harmony you still end up with poop. Modern dance music may not quite fit so strictly to the rules of a Bach chorale but its not completely random.

i'm not saying it's random. i'm just saying that if theory is still really all that relevant, it could do with a massive rewrite and take different forms and styles into account, and also accept that what we think the rules are now aren't really gonna be as important to us in a couple of centuries

Wise words. Plus, classical training doesn't teach you random shit but stuff that sounds GOOD in the first place. Sure, some thing or another might apply to stuf you write ona piano or shit like that but in general, knowing your chords/intervals/mommy is good for your music.

It's a nice saying and i'd like to believe it because it's exactly what i did- but I'd wager that a lot of our collective favorite artists haven't got a clue about the rules

and to be honest, to me it seems like music doesn't really have rules other than what does or doesn't work in a certain society. so long as someone enjoys it.
