Good find, I was not expecting that many records... wow
Dark angel, fall from the heavens above, send me an angel to heal my heart from being in love... After all of the love for you, in my life, but it wasn’t good enough for you, I can’t take no more tears from my eyes.... But it wasn’t good enough for you, I can't take no more hurt from that time....

But I care about his records.
Thing is, most people that listen to digital music are listening to mp3's.
Except audiophiles, dj's & producers, almost no one listens to WAV, AIFF or FLAC.
I hate everything that's not wav, aiff, or flac.
fuck off

I have alot of respect for this guy, but I've heard that most of the records in his collection are next to worthless and that $3m is an extortionate amount.

Though its still stupid, if I was some next millionaire I'd think nothing of spending a cool 3mil on that much music. I'd spend the rest of my life finding new shit, even if it is "The Muppets sing Oh! Calcutta." (He cant have heard them all himself, can he?)

And most HDDs only have a life expectancy of 10-15 years or so...

By the time you pass on your digital music collection to your descendents the physical format will probably have changed not just once but a few times. That's one of the problems with digital media storage - the technology advances so quickly and is so driven by money that storage tech becomes obsolete rapidly and the danger is not that the media becomes damaged, it's that compatible readers no longer get manufactured or readily obtainable and software changes to to the point where the data can't be accessed. The last 20 years have seen 5.25" floppies, 3.5" floppies, zip drives, cassette tapes, betamax, VHS, console cartridges and even CDs to some extent phased out. Old, low tech formats like books, microfilms and records survive and remain accessible for far longer and are more resilient against failure of civilization.

None of these are "hard drives"

What's the difference?

In 20 years it's probably going to be just as hard to get your hands on a USB cable as a floppy disc drive. If it all goes wireless (which it will), and cables turn obsolete, your old harddrives are just as fucked.

I'll have a chance to transfer it without a doubt.

great point kay.

I'm glad this didn't descend into the centuries old digital vs analogue debate, sure their are benfits and negatives of both but personally I can't see myself giving up vinyl for the sheer fact it's there...like right there, in front of me.

An apart from everything else, I find it distinctly less satisfying to look at a screen of mp3's than full shelves of records.

when you're transferring all your 1's and 2's from hard drive to hard drive in fear, my vinyl will still be there, for my kids and grandkids. they'll be able to hold an album in their hand, and look at it. maybe hang the album art on the wall.

I really hope someone who has the cash steps in and takes it to preserve it, and hopefully make the music available to the public again, like how http://www.archive.org works. There's no telling how many unheard classics are in that room. People's souls on records just sitting there collecting dust.
