i just made all my tunes available for DL on my soundcloud and bandcamp. i figure its free promo. id rather people have it than it be sitting on my harddrive you know.

I can't imagine Mr Oizo sending out free 320s regardless of how unsigned / unfinished / un-official / un-anything, the tune is, or posting up every track he did the night before. You have to maintain some level of ...(can't think of the right word)... if you want to be a quote un-quote "Real" artist. Which, however lofty a goal, I eventually do.

i do totally agree that released music has a level of quality and artistry that is important. this makes sense but with the changing landscape of the music industry artists have proven that you can give away music and be successful. im giving my tunes out so that more people will listen, period. its a choice you have to make as an artist but i suppose it can effect your image.

i don't know if any of you have heard of Mochipet, but in California he got really big in the dubstep/breakbeat community really really fast simply because he released both of his cd's free... it was posted all over burner websites, hippy festival links and stuff... only one of the cd's remained free, and the other was only free for a limited time....

but anyway, he got his music out to so many people that he got big in like 4 months.... I even hear people playing his music at burningman a lot, who arent even from california... i see him on all kinds of lineups... and i dont think his music is all that amazing (don't get me wrong, it's good, it just seems like he got big cuz he made himself big, not because his music was so good that his fans made him big...)

For me, I only play peoples tunes that are digital if I really like the tune.
If it works on the rig, I ask them permission to cut it. It's nice to have to ask permission. It's called having manners.

That's why I don't promote my stuff everywhere. I want someone to have to find it, like it, and like playing it.
I don't care about the next big thing or whatever... I just want to enjoy what I'm making or playing. Why bother otherwise?

Yeah it is good to not sit on your tunes, but I also don't reckon you should be putting them up until they're ready. Some people are putting up their first tune which is their prerogative, but I wanna wait until I'm really feeling my tunes until I let anyone but a couple of mates see them.

Can I just say right......If you get a big fan base because you're giving free stuff away, I bet you, you'd lose 50% of your fan base if you then got signed and put stuff out.

Spesh how many downloaders there are these days. The old moral fibre of "supporting the scene by buying tunes" is slowly dying out, trust.

This is a total hijack, but I've never understood why it's not "quote THING YOU'RE QUOTING un-quote."

(Ignore the actual quotation marks)

Anyone?

Pink Floyd made music for fame and money, are you going to tell them there's no emotion/feeling/realness in their tracks?

Lol this is where my naivety/arrogance comes in and I say, buy the music or fuck off, regardless of whether or not it will sell  Unless I class you as one of my pals or potential promoters you don't have the right to listen into my personal legacy.

Yeah I have been thinking over the last few days that all the half finished tunes I have made that are only a couple minutes long I should just finish them (just write an outro) and practice mixing (I never mix because I never finish anything), then put them up on the enet. I just have to except the fact that although the ideas of the tunes are really good I will never get around to making them the way I want them to sound, I just need to put them in the past since I never committed myself to expanding on the idea.

I dont have any finished tunes up on soundcloud, I dont see a point in making sketchy shit downloadable, hah. Plus I dont really have anything I officially go by. I think for my dnb tunes Ill go by my real name with an s at the end Robin McDonalds :| but now im just rambling.
