I instinctively isolate elements, but I kinda think I always have... to me ALL music (though mine has a terrible tendancy) sounds like its individual instruments vs. a collective whole... Theresa drummer, theres a bassist, theres a guitarist... theres these synths and these samples n ect... I know I listen to music differently then alot of my peers, and I have to try n kinda study the reactions of others to ground myself sometimes, specially picking tracks for sets... where as I might be selecting tracks out of respect for a phenomenal shuffle rhythm the audience around me can focus on a different aspect and follow a different portion entirely...
watch what the people who DONT listen to it like we do, the producers and djs... watch your average raver at a show or your homie who just likes tunes... take notes of what he nods too, take note of what makes them shape up n pay attention, and how.. youll really start to get a picture of how the track comes together for them... watch em nod...
but, all your talking about o.p., is that ear that hears inbits not wholes... consider it a gift, dont question it, learn from it.
