can't remember who it was but heard somewhere that a famous composer used to get this, apparently as a kid he thought the reason the lights went out during a concert or whatever was so the crowd would see the colours better, lol, that fact that you see colours then, does that mean you have pitch perfect hearing too?? surely the colours represent different notes so if you learn which notes are which colours you'd be able to have perfect pitch and therefore get exact renditions of the tunes in your head?? which I could do that. I spend HOURS trying to get riffs out of my head, I sit their whistling, lol, it's hard to whistle a wobble!!

I think that was perhaps Liszt? Not sure though. I remember hearing the same story. I'm almost sure it was him.

Also, the colours aren't just representative of note values. For me the colour changes based on movement, texture, phrasing, dynamics, instrumentation. Just about any element of sound has an influence on it. So I couldn't use it to be pitch perfect if I tried. Everyone experiences it differently though but seeing colours in music is more to do with how you perceive sound in general rather than how you perceive pitch.

still would like to experience it, just to see what it's like - my listening experience consists over analysis and if it's a hype one maybe a little booty shakin'

i put together my music like i draw, it's just an arrangement of colours until it makes sense to me

i spent years of my life learning theory and yet ended up just mostly forgetting because this has just always worked better for me. thank you for that, synesthesia

i can feel music sometimes too. it rubs on me all sexy like

Thanks for all the replies, got some really interesting info out of this thread and it's good to know that I have an 'ability' rather than just being a nutter claiming to see music

Kaori - that track you posted, I get a really light airy blue when the bells come in. On the drop that oriental sound, to me is also orange but it makes a movement in my head, like a firework or something. The hihats sound really yellow to me and the bass drum is like a round dark blue and the sub bass comes as purple to me

I love that track btw, I think I posted on it already, can't remember...

I wish it meant I was pitch perfect, I usually get a movement with pitch rather than a colour or shape representation.

It sounds weird and it did surprise me when I found out it was a known case, but I guess its just a sub-concious way breaking sounds down within your head and using things familiar to you group them. As far as I've worked out higher frequencies to me are lighter colours, and lower are darker, but it can vary due to the actual sound of the instrument.

I'd love to hear more on this so those blessed with this gift step forth!

I dont really get that, get imagery sometimes, when I was spliffed up listening to a half finished track I saw these bright white dots appearing with comet-like tails and just knew it was a simple beep with delay - and it fitted perfectly into the track :o

Also, I meant to ask, does anybody else find it can be a bit of a hinderance?

Sometimes I write god aweful tunes but I think they're great because of what I'm seeing, like the imagery over-rules the actual sound sometimes. Then I pass that tune on to friends and they're like "what the fuck is that garbage?" but I just can't hear it because I'm seeing something really nice in it.
