Quite a common way.
I wouldn't take it to seriously, 90% of people don't get paid from digital labels.
often the contract is more to protect themselves against artists shopping tunes to other labels after the verbal agreement is made
Thats true. You can spot someone who'll do something like that from a mile off though!
a personal friend did it to me

I don't understand. People release tunes on many different labels simultaneously...
let me clarify...
artists says: this tune will go on your label, sure!
label says: ok cool
2 weeks later...
Label: hey are you going to send those wavs? I have you slated for release in one month
artist: oh, sorry man, I told label X they can have that tune
so the contract would have prevented the artist from shopping the same tune to other labels
it has happened to me twice

It's supposed to be a legal requirement to get a specialist in contract law to look at your contract (UK law). I doubt you'd have a great case in court if you didn't and it ended in tears. It would probably complicate things greatly.
In fact major labels are required to send you to music contract specialists with your contract or their contract can be anulled through lack of understanding on the musician's part.
Ie You dont understand the contract so how could you have accepted it and agreed to it.
But I honestly advise anyone to visit at least a solicitor with prior knowledge in the field. You never know what could occur.

I went round to my label womans house and she explained everything in the contract to me personally
I guess you could contact the label, there was a thing in my contract saying, if I didn't understand what I was signing it can't count as anything and that they would provide a longer contract explaining things in more depth. So yeh you could contact your label and ask if they could go through it with you or go to a specialist or something and get them to read through it

As much as everyone says a contract doesn't mean anything, it might not mean anything to your ability to enforce the terms of the contract, but it may mean something in terms of the label's ability to enforce the contract against you. The label may have resources of which you are not aware. Maybe you blow up in a couple of years... you may be signing away your next 10 years worth of music production for next to nothing.
If you don't understand the contract I would recommend against signing it, that is not a legal recommendation, that is just common sense.
Find help.
